FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARK LAVER: SHINING EXAMPLES From urban parks after midnight, to trailer
park fires, car crashes, and rural highways, UVic alumnus Mark Laver
explores the narrative power of nocturnal imagery and the allure of oil
paint itself.

Shining Examples features a series of on-site paintings captured at night
and painted from the dim interior of his car or under street
lights, using any available light source. A selection of larger Rural
Disasters expands the nighttime repertoire by placing crumpled vehicles
and mobile home fires in rural locations. Growing up on rural Vancouver
Island, Mark Laver writes that "there is a certain visceralness to the
painting surfaces that undoubtedly find roots in the hands-on childhood
experiences of nature in an area of forest, swamps, beach and gravel
roads."

Shining Examples reflects the dark, wet, Vancouver Island nights in Mark
Laver's intimate Night Paintings and ambitious Rural Disasters. Smeared,
swirled, glazed and dripped, the luscious materiality of paint is as much
the subject of these paintings as the landscape he calls home.

This free exhibit runs from March 1 to 31, 2012, at the Legacy Art
Gallery at 630 Yates Street. Hours are Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m.
