CANMORE MUSEUM CONDUCTS DEEP RESEARCH IN ITS OWN 'CSI' PROJECT
January 27, 2012
[Canmore, Alberta] The Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre is asking probing
questions. It is playing on the CSI theme to solve the mystery surrounding
some of the objects in its collection. It wants to answer basic questions
about certain artifacts, historical photographs and documents.
Objects like an historical jukebox need context. When and where was it used?
What was the atmosphere like in that room? What's the story behind the
jukebox? These are the kinds of questions the museum is asking in its Deep
Research project. Leading this CSI-like investigation will be Collections
Manager Amanda Sittrop, a trained museologist.
"The objects in our museum have stories," Sittrop says. "We want to be able
to tell those stories through the voice of the people that were there and
remember them. That we can create a more relevant and reflective collection
that present and future generations can learn from and enjoy."
Aiding Amanda will be knowledgeable volunteers invited to participate in the
investigation. Leslie Lewis, museum board member and volunteer, says these
individuals are a "unique resource because they remember the early days of
our community. We must capture their stories and memories so they can be
preserved for later generations."
As Deep Research proceeds, the Canmore Museum will also be appealing to
members of the public to contribute any knowledge they might have about
items selected from the collection.
The Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre extends its gratitude to The Calgary
Foundation for its enthusiastic support of this project.
