There is no break for summer at the Vernon Public Art Gallery. Two weeks
following a hugely successful annual Fundraising event, Midsummer's Eve of
the Arts, the Vernon Public Art Gallery welcomes four new exhibitions
beginning on Thursday August 2nd. Several artists from the Central and North
Okanagan will exhibit series of paintings, from abstract to realism,
representing a variety of painting practices in all four Gallery spaces. 

 

"I have had the opportunity to tour Alistair's artist studio recently, and
meet with him to discuss this exhibition in preparation for writing the
exhibition brochure for the Gallery. In getting to know the artists in their
personal work space, I develop a greater understanding of the intention or
motivation behind the work and in turn, a greater appreciation for the art.
We are all really excited to welcome Alistair in the Topham Brown Gallery at
VPAG; this is going to be a great exhibition of large scale abstract
paintings." - said Lubos Culen, Vernon Public Art Gallery Curator. 

 

Alistair Rance: Everett Series, August 2 - October 22, 2012

Alistair Rance, an Armstrong, BC-based artist will exhibit a body of
abstract paintings in the exhibition titled Everett Series. Rance's studio
practice is based on an employment of linear elements (lines) as the main
means for production of paintings. While the structures of his artwork are
loosely based on landscape patterns, repeated layering and interpolation of
linear elements, the result includes abstract structures devoid of any
representational references. Rance's work will further contribute to the
discourse about abstraction and relational aesthetics.

 

David Wilson: We Are the People of the Heart, August 2 - November 1, 2012

David Wilson, a Vernon, BC-based Sylix First Nation artist, will exhibit
paintings based on the exploration and contemporary interpretation of
traditional narratives and cultural symbols of the Okanagan First Nations'
people. After the exploration of West Coast and Plains First Nations' art
forms in his early artistic career, Wilson started to draw inspiration from
his connection to the Okanagan First Nation art. He studied pictographs in
historic publications in local museums, various First Nations art books and
on-line. In the later stages of his artistic practice, Wilson has developed
his own unique style, combining vibrant colours and linear forms within a
circular picture format. His art work continues to draw from the stories of
his Okanagan First Nations heritage and culture with an emphasis on the
meaning, symbolism, and contemporary context of his work.

 

Marlene McPherson: Okanagan Dream Series, August 2 - October 22, 2012
This exhibition will feature a body of paintings focused on an intimate
portrayal of Okanagan landscapes in response to nearly twenty years of
studying and recording the many visual and ephemeral characteristics which
have contributed to making this geographical area so desirable. McPherson is
an artist and art educator based in Winfield, BC. Marlene is scheduled to
teach a workshop titled "Inspired by Nature" on Wednesday August 8th from
9am - 12pm. This workshop will be on location at Polson Park, en plein air,
and is suitable for beginners and experienced painters and caters to those
who enjoy the Okanagan landscape, local wildlife and garden spaces. The
Gallery is currently excepting registrations for both members and
non-members.

 

Creekside Landing Retirement Home Artists: Featuring Vernon, August 2 -
October 22, 2012
The Vernon Public Art Gallery will create an exhibition opportunity for
people participating in the art program administered by the Creekside
Landing Retirement Home in Vernon, BC. This exhibition will feature artistic
creations produced by people of varying abilities and ages who work outside
of an artistic mainstream.

 

The Vernon Public Art Gallery welcomes guests to attend the opening
reception on Thursday, August 2nd, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Enjoy food,
drinks and music, while perusing the new exhibitions the Gallery has to
offer. This event is open to the public by donation.
