The Art of Jack Wise:
Works from the University of Victoria Art Collections and University Archives
Jack Wise's work is deeply personal and spiritually profound. Known for
his calligraphy, Chinese brushwork, and mandalas, which embody Buddhist
cosmology or worldview, Jack Wise was a prolific artist and popular mentor
and teacher. This exhibition features a selection of stunning and
memorable paintings, prints, drawings and calligraphy by Wise, who spent a
considerable part of his artistic career on the west coast. Most of the
selected works are part of the permanent collections of the University of
Victoria Art Collections and University Archives, given to the University
in 2008.
Wised earned a BFA in 1953 at the University of Washington and a Master of
Science in Art degree, in 1955 from Florida State University. He practiced
art in San Miguel de Allende before immigrating to Canada in 1963. Three
years later he received a Canada Council grant to travel to northern India
where he spent time with refugee Tibetan Buddhist monks. As a result his
work became more complex and spiritually profound. He has taught at the
University of California, Victoria College and the Metchosin International
Summer School of the Arts.
Wise had several exhibitions throughout his career including Jack Wise, A
Decade of Work (1978) and Karma of the Dragon (2001) held at the Art
Gallery of Greater Victoria. His artwork is included in major
collections, including those of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria,
Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada Council Art Bank, The Smithsonian Institute,
Scottish Art Council, and several university collections across Canada.
The most comprehensive holdings are found at the University of Victoria.
Many of his works remain in private collections.
