northwest coast artists EXPLORE new media: painting on canvas

Vancouver, bc - JUNE 9, 2012: It's not uncommon to see Northwest Coast
painting on bentwood boxes, house fronts, screens and sculpture. What is
uncommon is to see Northwest Coast painting on canvas. Perhaps this is
because Northwest Coast painting traditionally was seen on functional
objects: paintings on canvas then defy this utilitarian concept, bringing a
whole new dimension to Northwest Coast art. We think it's worth exploring
this medium further.

 

>From June 16 to July 15, 2012, Lattimer Gallery will be hosting a Northwest
Coast group painting show titled Medium: Painting on Canvas. The premise of
the show is to leave the subject matter open to the artists' choice in order
to showcase their unique ideas of the role of painting in contemporary
Northwest Coast art. Included in the show are both young artists who are
exploring their painting style, and more established artists who have a
history of producing work in this medium. However, amidst the different
themes, styles and experience, what will be consistent among these artists
is the medium: painting on canvas. Selected artists included in this
exhibition are Rande Cook (Kwakwaka'wakw), Gwaai Edenshaw (Haida), Bradley
Hunt (Heiltsuk), Dean Hunt (Heiltsuk), Rob Long Jing (Haida), Sharifah
Marsden (Ojibway), Ian Reid (Heiltsuk), Steve Smith Dla'kwagila
(Kwakwaka'wakw), Nathan Wilson (Haisla) and Clint Work (Kwakwaka'wakw). An
online preview of the pieces will be available on June 11th. Opening
reception will be held on Saturday, June 16th, 5 to 8 pm.
