Attached is the press release for our new summer feature exhibit To the
Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA. The exhibit runs from Saturday June 2 to
Monday September 3. We have included a photo of two of our staff
building "Snoopy's Doghouse" one of the interactive play-spaces in the
exhibit (*see photo caption below).

 

We would also like to invite all media to visit us for early viewing &
photo opportunities starting on Wednesday May 30th, 2012 (anytime after

Snoopy Orbits the Moon at Nanaimo Museum

Discover the excitement of the spring and summer of 1969.  Nanaimo
Museum's To the Moon: Snoopy Soars with NASA exhibition, from Saturday
June 2 to Monday September 3, features Snoopy as he soared with Apollo
10, only two months before the first moon landing in July 1969. Through
cartoons, photographs and information about manned space exploration,
museum visitors will learn about the series of events that put man on
the moon. 

For young visitors there are cartoon characters for viewing, a creative
play space where they can climb inside Snoopy's outer-space doghouse,
and even have their photograph taken in a life-size Apollo 10 astronaut
suit standee. Every Thursday this summer is our drop-in Rocket Lab
program. Build a straw rocket, enter a balloon rocket race and leave
with a rocket treat. This program is included with the cost of admission
to the museum. 

See the original March 1969 Peanuts strip series of Snoopy's trip to the
moon. Snoopy plays an important role as the safety ambassador for NASA
and much of the exhibition celebrates the Silver Snoopy Award program.
One of the highlights of the exhibit is a Silver Snoopy pin that
actually flew to the moon! 

The crew of Apollo 10 chose to name their command and lunar modules
Charlie Brown and Snoopy, respectively.  Astronauts Thomas Stafford and
Eugene Cernan piloted "Snoopy" within 15,240 meters (50,000 feet) of the
lunar surface as they scouted the landing area for Apollo 11 and John
Young orbited the moon in the command module "Charlie Brown". Snoopy has
been the safety mascot for NASA ever since. This exhibit is organized by
the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Centre and is sponsored
locally by Toyota and Dairy Queen.
