TWEED RIDE 2012

The Tweed Ride Victoria is an annual charity event held on the
Saturday before Mother's Day. Part of an international movement which
began in London, England, Tweed Rides are a festive occasion

featuring numerous cyclists who dress in vintage clothing,

ideally a classic tweed suit, and travel about their respective city
on a designated route. The Tweed Ride generates funds for the
local non-profit, "Bicycles for Humanity - Victoria" which will be
sending used and donated bicycles and parts to Africa.

As part of the 2012 route, cyclists rested on the lawn of
Craigdarroch Castle. Tea and snacks will be provided by Red Fish Blue
Fish.

Dear Friend of the Castle,

We don't want you to miss out on our hottest summer activities.
We've got a few things up our sleeves, so mark your calendars now and
read on to find out what you can expect.

First: We are delighted to announce the release of "Victoria's
Castle" -
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?CraigdarrochCastle/3dd3ef9048/bb7542f092/71f5ec83ae a documentary produced and directed by Robin Adair. The documentary
chronicles the Dunsmuir's immigration to Canada and subsequent
success that led to the construction of Craigdarroch. Following the
story of how the Castle was built through its many uses as a military
hospital, former home of Victoria College (now the University of
Victoria) all the way through its current use as a museum,
"Victoria's Castle" is an entertaining and informative film that
tells the history not just of Craigdarroch, but much of the history
of the City of Victoria.

Screenings of the documentary will be held on Fridays at 7pm at
Craigdarroch, at least through June 8th. (Future dates to be
announced.) Admission is FREE for members and volunteers of The
Castle Society or open to the general public for the price of regular
admission plus $5.00. Advance reservations are highly recommended at
250-592-5323 or info at thecastle.ca. -

Father's Day

Victorian Garden Party

As part of the city's 150th anniversary celebrations, Craigdarroch
Castle will host its second annual Victorian Garden Party on
Saturday, August 4th.

This year's party will feature a free performance by Raven Baroque,
which has been funded in part by a City of Victoria 150th Anniversary
Grant. The
concert will begin at 1:00 pm and will go until 2:30. The party will
continue until 4:00 pm with games, refreshments and children's
entertainment. Last year's party was a smashing success with
approximately 400 people in attendance.

This year we are absolutely thrilled to announce that along with
works by Albinoni, Bach, Corelli, and Marcello, Raven Baroque will be
performing a few pieces of music written by Elinor Dunsmuir. Though
they may have been perfomed before, certainly none today can claim to
have heard the pieces and The Castle Society is truly excited to have
arranged for them to be performed. Most of her composing was designed
for full orchestras, so a selection of poems for which she wrote
music have been chosen to be performed, as they are more suited to a
smaller ensemble.

Rockland Neighborhood Party

The Rockland Neighborhood Association is pleased to announce the date
of "Rockland Rocks the 150th" on Saturday, September 8, 2012. The
event will be a neighborhood party celebrating the city's 150th
anniversary and the rich cultural heritage of the Rockland
Neighborhood.

The party will feature special events at each of the key Rockland
landmarks: Langham Court Theatre, the Art Gallery of Greater
Victoria, Craigdarroch Castle, and Government House along with
support from the Victoria Vintage Car Club, The Hallmark Heritage
Society and The City of Victoria 150. The entire community is
invited to attend and experience Rockland from a pedestrian
perspective. Guests will be encouraged to walk to each location for
the various events, collecting stamps on their 'passport' to
Rockland. Visitors with a full passport will be eligible to enter a
draw for prizes.
Highlights of the day will include:
Raising of Hosaqami, the new totem pole at Government House A bouncy
castle and croquet for kids at Craigdarroch Castle, Vintage Car
display by the Victoria Vintage Car Club, A book launch, exhibit and
live art at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Architectural
walking tours by the Hallmark Heritage Society, Fashion Show and
silent movies at Langham Court Theatre, Food, live music and general
merriment. A full schedule of the event will be released later this
summer, but all are encouraged to save the date and mark their
calendars for this momentous occasion. A wide variety of
entertainment and activities for all ages will ensure that there is
something for everyone to enjoy.
