When: Thursday, October 18, 2012

Why: Fall/Winter Exhibition Schedule, Opening Reception

Who: Vernon Public Art Gallery

The Vernon Public Art Gallery continues to offer exhibitions in a variety of
media, from artists locally and internationally, all while providing
information and education about contemporary visual arts. The upcoming
exhibitions opening October 18th fill this criteria without a problem.

Artists from the Sookinchoot Youth Centre of the Friendship Centre in Vernon
will present paintings, sculpture, digital prints and video. Gabriel Newman
will perform his interactive exhibition while engaging viewers in
conversation. The Contemporary Bulgarian Printmakers exhibition showcases 63
prints produced by 33 Bulgarian artists. The Vernon Public Art Gallery
continues to deliver a diverse schedule of exhibitions for all audiences.

“I am pleased to have once again worked with Associate Professor (UBCO -
Faculty of Critical and Creative Studies), Briar Craig, to bring the
Bulgarian Printmaking Exhibition to the Okanagan. As an advocate and
educator of printmaking, Briar has helped in the selection of many
outstanding works that provide a strong representation of art produced by
Bulgarian printmakers over the last decade. We are fortunate to offer an
exhibition of this caliber to the citizens of Vernon.” – said Lubos Cullen,
Curator, Vernon Public Art Gallery.

In partnership with UBCO and Briar Craig, the Vernon Public Art Gallery has
coordinated a studio tour on Saturday, November 3rd. Students will be
working in studio showing many of a variety of print mediums, and Craig will
give a guided tour of the facilities, provide insight on printmaking in the
art world today, and speak about the visual arts program and courses
available. Guests are encouraged to meet at the main floor foyer of the FINA
(Fine Arts) building on the UBCO campus at 1:00pm.

The Vernon Public Art Gallery is also offering an introduction to
printmaking workshop on monoprinting and stenciling on Saturday, November
17, at 11:00am. This workshop is open to both beginner and experienced
printmakers, as it teaches participants a number of printmaking techniques
of which they can explore. This is a great opportunity to learn about
printmaking with the inspiration of the Bulgarian Printmakers in the very
same location. This workshop is available by drop-in for a fee of $7 for
VPAG members, and $10 for non-members.

Various Artists: Contemporary Bulgarian Printmaking, October 18 – December
21, 2012

The Vernon Public Art Gallery will present an exhibition of prints titled
Contemporary Bulgarian Printmaking, produced by established and emerging
print artists from Bulgaria. Organized by Georgi Kolev, a founder and
Director of Lessedra Gallery & Contemporary Art Projects based in Sofia,
Bulgaria, this Contemporary Bulgarian Printmaking was exhibited
internationally since 2007 in the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, and the USA.

Gabriel Newman: The Funeral Café, October 18 – December 21, 2012

The Funeral Café is an interactive performance installation by Vernon-based
social performer Gabriel Newman, in which Newman will create a functioning
café in the Gallery. During the installation Newman will host free lunches
in exchange for stories about funerals. During non-lunch hours the café will
remain open so spectators can still come in and help themselves to coffee
and a snack while they listen to recorded stories.

Sookinchoot Youth Group: Tribes of Dawn, October 18 – December 21, 2012
The Gallery will organize and host the third annual exhibition produced by
youth under the guidance of First Nations mentor Wayne LaRiviere from
Vernon’s Sookinchoot Centre for Aboriginal Youth. Titled Tribes of Dawn, the
exhibition brings together traditional and contemporary works of art that
contribute to the understanding of cultural values and history of the
Okanagan First Nations. The exhibition will include two and
three-dimensional artwork, photography, video works, and a contemporary
interpretation of traditional crafts. Artists: Harley Knife, Pierre Richard,
Clara Hovan, Mary-Rose Cohen, Patrick Dobslaff, Emma Cohen, Jolene Denham,
Seth Tonasket.
