Anniversaries are reminders
Milestone anniversaries, like 150 years, are opportunities for re-visiting history
150 years is far beyond the traditional anniversary gift of diamonds
There is a shared experience of colonial history that swims within those 150 years
There is the act of naming this history
There is an act of transformation
A Button Blanket Dance, A Projected River and A Courthouse is a new collaborative performance work that addresses the complex colonial narratives within the city of Victoria.
A Button Blanket Dance, A Projected River and A Courthouse acts as a vehicle to acknowledge the shared histories of the land we live on. We gather together to illuminate the beauty of the Coast Salish Land. We gather together to lift up the buildings and create a space for the land to breath again.
We gather at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia. This is the meeting place for our work. This building has deep roots into the land. This building has lived many lives, including as the former Supreme Court. History is measured by the places of impact between western settler culture and indigenous cultural practice. I think we can be brave enough to face these moments in a very respectful manner. This courthouse is an impact site, a place where settler culture and indigenous cultural practice collides. We all feel the effect of this impact.
A Button Blanket, A Project River, and A Courthouse is a movement within this impact site, a movement like the flow of a river. This river has the power to shift the history. We will enter into this historic site and speak from with our cultural voices. We will bring the land in the courthouse. The land will rewrite these impact histories. This is our way of honouring the power of the land. 150 years is but a drop within these thousands of years of exciting history. We gather together to begin the task of illuminating beauty.
And together, we offer this work into the history of Victoria.
This work is a collaborative effort.
As a part of the event, we will be showing the video works of Barry Sam.
A Button Blanket Dance, A Projected River and A Courthouse is a collaborative performance scheduled to take place on Oct 12th, 2012.
