50 Years and More of the Canadian Coast Guard on Pacific Shores

With a new exhibit opening October 23rd 2012, the Maritime Museum of BC aims to honour the men and women of Canadian Coast Guard. This year they celebrate 50 years of service and safety, however their origins can be traced back as far back as the 1700s on the East Coast. Our new exhibit will take a look back to the earliest live-saving efforts on Pacific Shores, from light stations, to the West Coast trail and the pioneers who made the Canadian Coast Guard what it is today.

Officially created in January, 1962, the Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for the longest coastline in the world, in all its rugged, rocky, sandy and icy glory. Today the Canadian Coast Guard Pacific Region monitors over 27,000 km of coastline, the largest area in the organisation. Over 1000 Pacific Region staff in the Yukon and British Columbia operate and maintain the Region's shore stations, vessels, marine aids and helicopters.

Visitors to the Museum will be able to check out a vast array of Canadian Coast Guard material, including photographs, early and new lifesaving equipment, stories of courage in the face of dangerous storms and high seas, and information on the latest research and arctic trips. We are very pleased to present this exhibit with the help of some very kind sponsors, one of which (Virtual Marine Technologies) has donated for the period of the exhibit a world class Zodiac Rescue Simulator. Guests will be able to try their hand at driving a virtual zodiac, searching for and rescuing a person in distress.
