Food from the Home Front, a tribute at BC Bites & Beverages

Victoria, BC - Savour the flavour that came from Victory Gardens and learn about war-time cooking at the next BC Bites and Beverages event, Food from the Home Front, Nov. 8 from 7 to 9 pm at the Royal BC Museum.

Author Carolyn Herriot will begin with food production during the Victorian era when people were moving to Vancouver Island, then talk about the Victory Gardens of both World Wars. She will link this to a future disaster scenario - what we would eat if cut off from the mainland food supply - and a short film on the production of local legumes, pulses and grains.

This evening is a tribute to those who endured the domestic home front. A cookbook published in New York in 1918 began with the seven commandments of war-time cooking, including "Buy for each day some potatoes and one other vegetable . . . ." Those that had access to a Victory Garden could then have afforded one of the other recommendations: "Buy 2 to 3 ounces of fat for each grown person." Some of the recipes featured peanut butter, substituted other grains for white flour, or used maple syrup for the white sugar that was in short supply - some fairly healthy choices.

Truffles Catering will re-create the tastes of the period with appetizers from recipe books used during World War II while guests mingle and chat. Janet MacDonald, Royal BC Museum, will show a few of the war-time recipe books held by the BC Archives, and provide copies of the booklet "War-Time Recipes by Olive E. Hayes, Government Food Specialist" to take home.

Carolyn Herriot is author of 'The Zero Mile Diet, a Year-round Guide to Growing Organic Food' and a companion book 'The Zero-Mile Diet Cookbook- Seasonal Recipes for Delicious Homegrown Food' (Harbour Publishing). Carolyn is a food security consultant and regular columnist for BC Home & Garden and CommonGround magazines. She grows certified organic 'Seeds of Victoria' at The Garden Path Centre in Victoria.
