Human rights museum merchandise made in countries with poor human rights records
Global News Share/Partager
Some of the merchandise being sold to help raise money for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights is
being produced in countries with questionable records on human rights and workers' rights, an investigation
has uncovered. The museum, which is under construction in Winnipeg, is almost $100 million over budget.
As a result, the organization has launched a fundraiser, selling T-shirts, among other products. More/LIRE

More/LIRE PLUS

A spooky artifact plays havoc on museum curators
The StarPhoenix Share/Partager
Tracene Harvey is the curator at the University of Saskatchewan's Museum of Antiquities. The small
museum is located in the Peter MacKinnon Building (formerly the College Building), and hosts a trove of
ancient artifacts. One of these artifacts may harbour some paranormal energy from the time of ancient
Egypt. "There's been a few odd things. We haven't seen anything or captured anything on camera yet,"
said Harvey. More/LIRE PLUS

Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame to officially open to the public
Winnipeg Free Press Share/Partager
Manitoba's greatest athletes finally have a permanent home to call their own. The Manitoba Sports Hall of
Fame will officially open to the public on Saturday in the Sport for Life Centre at 145 Pacific Avenue. The
HOF has a little of everything - jerseys, pictures, trophies, boxing gloves, hockey helmets and sticks,
footballs, bicycles, newspaper articles and famous quotes on the walls. More/LIRE PLUS

Vancouver Art Gallery's Ian Wallace retrospective captures photos, paintings, and even film
Straight.com Share/Partager
It's a little-known fact that Ian Wallace, one of Canada's most important and influential visual artists, once
wrote film reviews for the Georgia Straight. It was 1971, a year before he started teaching art history at
what was then the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University), and the modest fee - $25 per
review - helped sustain him during the early years of his art-making career. "My rent at the time was $75 a
month," he recalls with a laugh. Critiquing, say, Death in Venice could account for a fair portion of that.

Andrew Salgado: Portrait of the artist as a young man on the rise
The Globe and Mail Share/Partager
There's a bold, tortured beauty to the portraits of Andrew Salgado, and in London, where the Regina-born-
and-raised painter has lived since 2008, collectors and critics are noticing. His new show, The Misanthrope,
opened at Beers.Lambert Contemporary earlier this month, and by the end of the second day, more than
half the paintings had sold. The work is complex and provocative in its technique and subject matter
(there's a portrait of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer). "I don't shy from melodrama in my work," says Salgado,
29. More/LIRE PLUS
