John Hartman: The Columbia in Canada

On view from September 22, 2012 to January 20, 2013 at the Kelowna Art Gallery

September 10, 2012 - Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to announce a new exhibition of works presented with the generous support of Scotiabank by nationally recognized landscape artist John Hartman. Opening September 22, 2012, John Hartman: The Columbia in Canada is an exploration of landscape and communities tied together by a common thread, the Columbia River Basin. John
Hartman: The Columbia in Canada will be on view from September 22, 2012 to January 20, 2013 at the Kelowna Art Gallery.

>From its headwaters in the Rocky Mountains where it flows first north, before turning sharply to the south, and eventually into the United States, the Columbia River significantly shapes the land and its communities with a massive drainage basin roughly the size of France. John Hartman: The Columbia in Canada is a selection of thirty watercolours inspired by various locales along the Columbia River
and throughout its vast basin in south-eastern British Columbia.

Although based in Ontario, Hartman was moved to capture the landscape he saw travelling in this region during two recent trips. The small-format paintings range from depictions of Kootenay Pass Summit to Layer Cake Mountain, Kelowna.

A full-colour catalogue, reproducing each work, along with essays will be produced to accompany the show.

An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, September 21, 2012, from 7 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This will be a free event, open to members and guests, by invitation.
