Fraser River Discovery Centre Receives $30,000 from RBC Blue Water Project

"Donation for Being Featured Charity for RBC GranFondo Whistler"

New Westminster, BC - The Fraser River Discovery Centre (FRDC) is the
recipient of a $30,000 donation from the RBC Blue Water Project. FRDC
received the award as the featured charity at this past weekend's RBC
GranFondo Whistler, in which thousands of cyclists took part in a 122 km
journey from Vancouver to Whistler.

”We are very grateful for the donation and even more honoured to receive it
as part of this year’s RBC GranFondo Whistler,” said FRDC Executive Director
Catherine Ouellet-Martin. ”The Discovery Centre’s work in bringing awareness
to issues related to the Fraser River watershed is perfectly aligned with
the RBC Blue Water Project. In addition, all our programs can be combined
with a bike tour through Fraser River Bike Tours and Rentals at the River
Market. Truly, this was a perfect fit!”

The RBC Blue Water Project is an innovative, wide-ranging, 10-year global
commitment to help protect the world’s most precious natural resource: fresh
water. It includes a $50 million philanthropic commitment to organizations
that protect watersheds and ensure access to clean drinking water. The RBC
Blue Water Project also promotes responsible water use through awareness
programs and supports programs that encourage businesses to develop and
commercialize innovative solutions to the water issues facing the world.
Since 2007, RBC has pledged over $42 million to more than 500 not-for-profit
organizations worldwide that protect watersheds or ensure access to clean
drinking water.

“The Discovery Centre is bringing awareness to the Fraser River in fun and
innovative ways,” said Susan Roh, Manager at the Plaza 88 RBC Branch in New
Westminster. “RBC is committed to making a lasting social impact that
strengthens health and well-being of communities. It’s wonderful that RBC
can support a charity from our community that has such a positive impact.”

Gran fondos are mass participation cycling events that have enjoyed
incredible popularity in Europe for decades and are gaining momentum in
North America. Loosely translated from Italian, gran fondo means "big ride".
The inaugural 2010 RBC GranFondo Whistler was the first world-class gran
fondo in Canada.

“We are delighted to be able to shine the spotlight on the importance of our
watersheds,” said event organizer, Kevin Thomson. And the Fraser Basin is
essential to the lives of millions.

FRDC will use the donation from RBC to help provide interactive educational
experiences that increase appreciation and understanding of the Fraser River
environment, including the River’s social and economic importance and to
help ensure its sustainability for future generations. Through its education
programs, the Centre fosters a stronger understanding, ownership and desire
to act positively to affect the health of the Fraser River.
