_CONSERVATION ASSISTANT_

**

*DUTIES:*

Reporting to the Conservator, the incumbent assists in providing 
conservation services for the Gallery including condition assessments of 
works of art for new acquisitions, exhibitions and loans; preventive 
conservation related to the maintenance, presentation, storage and loan 
of art works; and conservation treatments.

Responsibilities include: liaison with curatorial, registration, 
preparation and other professional and technical departments concerning 
conservation requirements and/or recommendations; preparing works for 
storage, loan, tours or exhibitions including recommendations and 
implementing specialized packing and/or housing needs, undertaking basic 
preventive or restorative conservation treatments; maintaining 
departmental records and database files; producing reports and 
responding to requests forinformation; and supervising interns and 
volunteers.Some travel may be required.

*QUALIFICATIONS:*

The successful candidate will exercise thoroughness, initiative and 
attention to detail and use specialized technical knowledge of 
conservation examination, documentation and treatment procedures to 
undertake the above functions. S/he will have a solid understanding of 
conservation principles and standards.

A degree in art conservation studies (or equivalent) from a recognized 
institution is required plus a minimum of two years' experience working 
as a conservation assistant in a Museum or Gallery setting. Considerable 
knowledge of preventive conservation for fine art collections, as well 
as conservation practices related to basic treatments is required. An 
applied knowledge of standard handling, care, storage, packing and 
crating procedures is essential, as is computer skills and proficiency 
in relevant databases. Excellent communication (written and verbal) 
skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working 
relationships with staff, volunteers, and members of the public are key 
attributes. Knowledge of contemporary art is an asset. The successful 
applicant will be required to consent to a Criminal Record Check.

*SALARY:*Pay Grade 20 Step 1$23.05 per hour

*HOURS:*Monday to Friday; nine day fortnight
