Job title: Museum Assistant

Start and end dates: Monday, June 3, 2013 to Thursday, August 22,
2013
Duration: 30 hours per week (7.5 hours per
day)
Mondays - Thursdays for 12 weeks
Hourly Wage: $14 per hour
Job Description:
The JMABC is seeking a Museum Assistant to assist in the development of
our online exhibition, entitled an Online Storied Timeline of British
Columbia <http://www.jewishmuseum.ca/node/7692> , and outdoors
exhibition of Leonard Frank photographs (pending other grants and time).
The JMABC's Online Storied Timeline of BC has become an annual tradition
and a successful, replicable model for other Jewish Historical Societies
in Canada, and beyond; the Museum Assistant would be integral to the
exhibition's success.
The primary responsibilities to be completed by the Museum Assistant
under the supervision of the Education Coordinator will include:
* Outreach to BC Jewish organizations to educate groups and
individuals about this opportunity and confirm participation;
* Coordinate and communicate with BC Jewish organizations to
research each individual participating organization and surrounding
history;
* Use primary and secondary resources, including interviews, to
create the copy and images required to build unique exhibit pieces and
exhibition narratives, for each participating organization, section, and
display;
* Assist with the creation of a uniform panel designs;
* Assist with the design of exhibition plans;
* Assist with the installation of the exhibit;
* Assist with writing copy for media releases, marketing and
promotions;
* Assist the Education Coordinator with logistics, i.e. venue
bookings, etc.
Secondary duties may include:
* Create an outline for self-guided and guided exhibition tours;
* Research articles, publications, and photographs from the JMABC
collection;
* Assist in research and development of other small-scale
exhibitions;
* Provide assistance during historic walking tours of Jewish
sites in Vancouver;
* Add content to the JMABC website;
* Write articles and/or media releases about the JMABC
educational initiatives.
The ideal candidate for the Museum Assistant position will have:
* A demonstrated interest in working in a history or heritage
institution as shown through previous volunteer or paid work experiences
and/or an academic background in a related field such as history,
anthropology, museum studies, Jewish studies, education, or project
management;
* Excellent English communications skills, both written and
verbal;
* Basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
Suite;
* Comfortable working independently and/or remotely;
* A positive, up-beat attitude and a strong work ethic;
* Attention to detail;
* Any experience working with digital imaging software such as
Adobe Photoshop will be considered an asset.
This position is dependent upon receipt of funding through the Young
Canada Works (YCW), administered by the Canadian Museums Association
(CMA). Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements
dictated by the YCW program to be considered for this position:
* Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee
status in Canada;
* Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
* Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of the project;
* Meet the specific eligibility criteria of the program to which
you apply;
* Be registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;
* Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work
assignment;
* Not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while
employed with YCW;
* Have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the YCW
job;
* Intent to return to full-time studies in the semester following
the YCW job.
Candidates will be short-listed for an interview based on how they meet
the criteria noted above. Interviews will not commence until the
recruitment stage is closed. Once the successful candidate for the
Internship is determined, all other applicants will be notified.
