The Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia (JMABC), administered
by the Jewish Historical Society of British Columbia (JHSBC), is seeking
an Assistant Archivist to work on the Arrangement and Description of the
Congregation Emanu-El fonds Project. As part of the mandate of the
JMABC, the archives documents, acquires and preserves archival records,
thereby safeguarding the history of the Jewish community of British
Columbia. The primary duties for this project include background
research and appraisal of the Congregation Emanu-El fonds, physical
processing, arrangement and description and finding aid production.
Other duties may include transcribing oral history interviews, adding
content to the JMABC website, filing and re-filing community
publications and research files, digitizing photographs, assisting
research requests and helping visitors in the JMABC's Reference Room.

In 2013 Congregation Emanu-El (Canada's oldest continuously operating
synagogue) will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its establishment. In
2012, in preparation for the 150th anniversary, congregants began to
take notice of the boxes containing their invaluable history which were
scattered around the synagogue. Commemoration of the history of the
congregation required access to these records that had been neglected
since their creation. This led to the donation of the material to the
JMABC.

The Congregation Emanu-El fonds consists of over 20 boxes of historical
Congregation Emanu-El material (ca. 1865-2000s). Highlights include
minute books, marriage registers and some of the oldest documents in the
JMABC collection, including the original cemetery deed dated 1865. This
collection is the first step for Congregation Emanu-El in the commitment
to the long-term preservation and access of their material.

The timely nature of this donation, with the upcoming 150th anniversary
of Congregation Emanu-El, makes it imperative that this collection be
given priority for processing. Therefore, the JMABC is seeking funding
to help cover the cost of processing the Congregation Emanu-El fonds.
This project will cover two separate needs: preserving and documenting
this important collection of material; and making the JMABC more
accessible to the Jewish communities of all of British Columbia by
uploading the finding aid online.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate for the Assistant Archivist at the JMABC will have:

-a demonstrated interest in working in an archival or heritage
institution shown through previous volunteer or paid work experiences
and/or an academic background in a related field such as history,
anthropology, museum studies, library studies or archival studies.
Preferences will be given to archival studies students;

-basic computer skills and will be comfortable working independently at
a computer station. Any experience working with databases or digital
imaging software such as Adobe Photoshop will be considered an asset;

-excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal;

-an enthusiastic attitude.

The Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia advocates a
barrier-free workplace and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.

Please submit a resume and cover letter by email by the application
deadline 5 pm, Thursday May 9, 2013.
