Salty Sunday
Join us this Sunday, February 10 for Salty Sundays: a fun way to get the whole family to learn, imagine and create together. Every second Sunday of the month to hear stories and take part in themed crafts, as we explore BC’s maritime heritage together. This month, the museum presents Chinese Dragons where families can celebrate Chinese New Year’s and bid farewell to the year of the dragon. Through storytellers and crafts we will discover where dragon and dragon boating stories originated from. Looking forward to seeing you, drop in anytime from 1 to 3pm.
Guardians of the Coast Speaker Series
On February 27 at 7:00pm, the Guardians of the Coast speaker series continues. Our second guest speaker, Jon Churchill will speak about the history of the Coast Guard’s Inshore Rescue Boat Program during its very active days (1976 – 1994). He will also be speaking about the founding and nurturing of two other programs, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Office of Boating Safety.
The Guardians of the Coast speaker series runs through March with guest speakers sharing more of the Coast Guard story. On March 27, we welcome Captain Clay Evans who will be discussing the Canadian Lifesaving Service on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. Doors open at 6:30pm with the event starting at 7:00pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and members and children under 12 are free.
On January 27, the first speaker, Captain Bill Noon treated more than 40 people to a glimpse into what the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier experienced in the Arctic this past summer. Highlights of Bill's talk include the CBC's presence last summer and the Franklin expedition, and how more people have died searching for Franklin's ships than the number of men who were lost. Bill also told members and guests about charting the Arctic, describing passages where his ship may have been one of only a few to ever navigate those waters.
Floating on the Margins: Chinese Life on the Canadian Pacific Passenger Liners
Sailors and Chinese labourers aboard the C.P. R.M.S. Empress of India. Courtesey of The Chung Collection
To celebrate the 155th anniversary of Victoria’s Chinatown, the Maritime Museum is proud to present an exhibit which celebrates the important contributions that Chinese Canadians made to BC’s maritime heritage opening on February 28. With items from the Maritime Museum and UBC’s Chung collection, this special exhibition illustrates the lives of early Chinese Canadian sailors and passengers on the Canadian Pacific Passenger Liners.
