[BCMA] Public Programming - on-campus course at UVIC

The Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria, British Columbia is pleased to offer the following learning opportunity for professionals and volunteers working in museums, art galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and other non-profit organizations.

Please join us on-campus in March for:

Public Programming (HA 488G)

March 11 - 16, 2013; on-campus offering

Instructor: Dr. Candace Tangorra Matelic

This course examines the critical role of education, interpretation, and public programming in helping museums, galleries, interpretive centres and other cultural organizations engage their communities in meaningful and long-term ways. You will explore how such organizations create memorable learning experiences for visitors of all ages and backgrounds, develop community outreach approaches, and plan for the delivery, staffing, management and evaluation of programs. Your participation in this course will strengthen your ability to:


*         Evaluate the evolving role of education, interpretation and public programming in museums and heritage organizations

*         Explore the benefits of embracing learning as a critical organizational outcome

*         Develop programming policy in relation to the overall mission of the museum

*         Analyze staff, visitor, and community needs

*         Identify the key components in creating memorable learning experiences for visitors

*         Apply a systematic planning process to program research, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation

*         Compare the strengths and weaknesses of various programming approaches

*         Utilize various learning and teaching strategies for public programs

*         Evaluate and improve existing museum programs

*         Expand community outreach approaches to reach and serve new audiences, including web-based public programs and new community venues

*         Engage your communities in meaningful and sustained relationships


Fee: Fee: CAD $693 (Canadian funds, credit and non-credit participation options) including a CAD$75 materials fee and a CAD$100 tuition/registration deposit is required with each registration form. The tuition balance of CAD$518 is due on or before the first day of the course. UVSS Fees will also be assessed to credit students only.

Registration deadline: February 11; late registrations accepted if space permits.

About the Instructor:

Candace Tangorra Matelic, Ph.D. brings three decades of experience in historical organizations and the academy, in both public programming and leadership, to her current work. Candace is sought after as a visionary planner, a provocative speaker, an effective teacher, and a skilled facilitator for community workshops, retreats and professional development gatherings. Her expertise lies in the areas of organizational analysis, change, learning and development, community engagement, transformational leadership, strategic planning for interpretation and public programs, and the development of open air museums. She persistently advocates for meaningful public service, valuing people, learning and systems in organizations, and embracing interpretation as an organizational priority. Candace's work is distinguished by helping museums, historic sites and cultural organizations engage their communities as partners, and then fundamentally transform their vision, assumptions, organizational culture, activities, and work patterns.

About Our Program

The Cultural Resource Management Program offers on-campus and distance education courses for professionals, volunteers and board members in museums, galleries, heritage sites, cultural centres and related organizations. Courses are designed to address the emerging needs of the sector and build your personal and organizational capacity.

In our courses, you interact with colleagues from across North America and beyond, participate in stimulating learning activities, and relate your learning to the practical issues and realities of your workplace and community. Courses are taught by instructors who are leading professionals in the field.

Courses can be taken individually or towards a comprehensive diploma or focused professional specialization certificate. Individual credit and non-credit course registration options are also available. Choose the program and / or course best suited to meet your needs from the flexible options available.
