Guardians of the Coast speaker series at the Maritime Museum of BC

On January 23, the Guardians of the Coast speaker series launches at the Maritime Museum of BC with Coast Guard Captain Bill Noon speaking about the Franklin expedition and the work that his ship CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier accomplished in Great Canadian North this past summer.

"We're excited that Captain Noon will be sharing his experiences with our members and the public in this speaker series," says Jan Drent, past president of the Maritime Museum of BC's board of trustees. "Bill Noon is a seasoned Arctic hand and his talk promises to be a fascinating update on the little-known work our Coast Guard is doing year after year in Canada's Arctic to expand scientific knowledge which will also facilitate improved naval and commercial navigation."

Featured on CBC's the National, the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier and her crew were key contributors to the two-week search for HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, the lost ships of the 1845 expedition led by Sir John Franklin in the quest for the Northwest Passage. While in the Arctic, the CCGS Sir Wilfrid Laurier also supported the research efforts of various agencies and organizations.

The Guardians of the Coast speaker series runs through March with guest speakers sharing more of the Coast Guard story. Doors open at 6:30pm with the event starting at 7:00pm.  Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, and children under 12 and members are free.  For more information about the speaker series, please visit our website.
