BC Sports Hall of Fame to Induct 9 Individuals and 1 Team
Vancouver, B.C. (January 22, 2013) - The British Columbia Sports Hall of
Fame to induct nine individuals and one team for induction as part of its
2013 class.
"The 2013 Class of Inductees to be honoured by the BC Sports Hall of Fame
showcases the best of the best in BC sport," said Marion Lay, Honoured
Member and chair of the Selection Committee, "Our selection committee did an
outstanding job of sifting through over 100 nominations, we truly thank them
and the members of the public who take the time to submit nominations."
Induction recognizes excellence in sport, contribution to sport and the
impact on sport in British Columbia, in the categories of athlete, team,
builder, media, pioneer, and W.A.C. Bennett. After extensive review,
discussion and debate, the Selection Committee submitted their
recommendations to the Board of Trustees of the BC Sports Hall of Fame who
confirmed the 2013 slate of inductees. The Selection Committee is comprised
of thirteen individuals representing the BC sport community at large,
members of the BC Sports Hall of Fame Board of Trustees and the media.
Honoured Member Tom Larscheid announced the 2013 induction class today in
the revitalized Hall of Champions of the BC Sports Hall of Fame. The 2013
induction class includes:
In the athlete category, five athletes - Kevin Alexander (lacrosse), Dawn
Coe-Jones (golf), Brent Hayden (swimming), Robert 'Ro' Hindson (rugby), and
Peter Reid (triathlon). In the builder category, Kathy Shields (basketball)
and Ken Shields (basketball) have been selected. Selected for induction in
the pioneer category is Larry Kwong (ice hockey) and in the W.A.C. Bennett
category, Pat Quinn (ice hockey). The 1965 Ocean Falls Amateur Swimming Club
has been selected for induction in the team category (swimming) and Larry
Isaac (Sport TV Producer) has been selected for induction in the media
category.
The 2013 Inductees will be formally inducted to the BC Sports Hall of Fame
at the 45th Annual Banquet of Champions presented by Canadian Direct
Insurance at the Vancouver Convention Centre on September 19, 2013.

KEVIN ALEXANDER - Lacrosse
. From Victoria
. One of the greatest goal-scorers in Canadian lacrosse history
. Won one Minto Cup and two Mann Cups during his career
DAWN COE-JONES - Golf
. Born in Campbell River
. 25-year LPGA veteran considered one of the most successful
Canadian female golfers ever
. Won three LPGA Tour events and over $3 million in career earnings
BRENT HAYDEN - Swimming
. Born in Mission
. Three-time Canadian Olympian who captured a dramatic bronze medal
in the 100m freestyle at the London 2012 Olympics finishing with a time of
47.80 seconds, he was the first Canadian ever to medal in the highly
competitive event.
. 2007 world champion in 100m freestyle
ROBERT 'RO' HINDSON - Rugby
. From Naramata, attended UVIC and UBC
. Dominant physical presence in both the 15-a-side and 7-a-side
versions of rugby
. Represented Canada abroad for eighteen years earning a then-record
31 international caps
PETER REID - Triathlon
. From Victoria
. Three-time Ironman Triathlon world champion and also has three
2nd-place and one 3rd-place world championship finishes
. Owns the third-fastest Ironman triathlon time ever run at 7 hrs 51
min 56 seconds
BUILDER CATEGORY
KATHY SHIELDS - Basketball
. From Victoria
. Possibly the most respected coach in Canadian women's basketball
history
. Over 22-year coaching career at UVIC, she won a CIS-record eight
national titles
KEN SHIELDS - Basketball
. From Victoria
. The most successful coach in the history of Canadian university
basketball
. Won a CIS-record seven straight national championships beginning
in 1980 while coaching at UVIC
MEDIA CATEGORY
LARRY ISSAC - Sport TV Producer
. From Coquitlam
. Worked as a producer of countless local, national, and
international television broadcasts during 35-year career
. Produced CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, CKVU's Sports Page, Olympic
Games broadcasts, as well as golf, tennis, track & field, among others
TEAM CATEGORY
1965 OCEAN FALLS AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB
. From small, isolated company town of approximately 3000 people
. Won the combined (men and women) team trophy at the Canadian
Swimming Championships
. Defeated much larger 'city' teams to take the championship

PAT QUINN - Ice Hockey
. One of the most recognizable faces in Canadian Sport, has made an
enormous contribution to sport in British Columbia as an athlete, coach,
general manager and owner
. Holds the fifth highest all-time winning percentage amongst NHL
coaches with 657 wins to his name.
. Twice led teams to the Stanley Cup Final - first with Philadelphia
in 1980 and of with Vancouver in 1994
