FRDC CALLS ON KINDER MORGAN TO PROTECT FRASER RIVER

“Newly Proposed Pipeline Route Must Not Impact River”

New Westminster, BC – The Fraser River Discover Centre (FRDC) today called
on Kinder Morgan to ensure the protection of the Fraser River should it
proceed with a new route for its oil pipeline that brings it closer to the
River.  Kinder Morgan unveiled the new potential route option for its oil
pipeline on June 21st, 2013, which would see it divert from the existing
route to avoid built-up areas, but bring the pipeline closer to the Fraser
River in the process.

“As the Voice of the Fraser River, we believe everything must be done to
protect the River before that route could be approved,” said Catherine
Ouellet-Martin, Executive Director of FRDC. “Anything that potentially
impacts the environmental, economic or social future of the Fraser River is
something we would be gravely concerned about.”

In addition, FRDC offered its facility in New Westminster up as a site for
potential public consultation and discussion on the part of the proposed
pipeline closest to the River.

“One of our roles is as a public convenor on all issues and activities
related to the Fraser River,” added Ouellet-Martin. “We would welcome an
opportunity to host Kinder Morgan and all those interested in this pipeline
route to have a fact based discussion regarding the potential benefits and
impacts.”

 

The Fraser River Discovery Centre is an interpretive centre connecting
communities in the discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser
River. Located along the Westminster boardwalk at 788 Quayside Drive, New
Westminster, the Discovery Centre is open 10:00am to 6:00pm, 7 days a week
throughout the summer. Admission to the galleries is by donation.  For
