General Info:

 

Oliver and District Heritage Society is currently seeking a Museum Assistant
to join our team for the 2013 summer season. 

 

Oliver is a charming agricultural community of about 7,000, located in the
heart of one of the most desirable recreational and retirement regions of
BC. The South Okanagan has one of the most enviable climates in Canada and
boasts year-round recreational activities like hiking, fishing, and golf in
the summer to skiing, curling and snowshoeing in the winter. The Town of
Oliver is also known as the Wine Capital of Canada. The Town was named after
BC Premier John Oliver (1918-1927) and has a rich history in gold mining,

Job Description:

 

The successful candidate, supported by the Community Heritage Manager, will
develop Museum and Office Administration skills through practical hands-on
experience by performing daily tasks and working on special projects
essential to the operation of a heritage organization, with an emphasis on
collections, exhibits, and programs.

 

Job Duties include:

.         Research and develop materials for exhibits and programs, with a
focus on creating a new education collection;

.         Docent work leading tours through the facilities and  downtown
core, interpreting exhibits, built heritage, and other heritage resources
within the community;

.         Collections management procedures - cataloguing, inventorying,
digital imaging, and implementing appropriate preventive conservation
measures for various artifact types, including re-storing in new collections
storage facility;

.         Correspondence, filing, and data entry into Past Perfect database
to improve accessibility to Heritage Society's collections

.         Operate and interpret the Conservation Station, a hands-on
artifact care demonstration with audience participation

.         Assist patrons with research requests regarding information from
archives collection and reference library

.         Visitor Services - greet and assist visitors in a friendly, open
manner; operate gift shop and front desk reception 

 

Qualifications:

 

The successful candidate will be a student currently enrolled in a
post-secondary program in Museum Studies, Archival Studies, Canadian
History, Heritage Resource Management, Information Management, Education, or
a related field, with an interest in history and heritage resources. He/she
must have strong computer research skills and experience using database
software as well as knowledge in digitization and photo editing systems.
Museum experience, particularly with artifact handling, digital photography,
and conservation, is preferred. Basic office skills, visitor services, and
docent experience would be an asset. 

 

The Museum Assistant should be a team player with the ability to work
independently. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, adaptable to new
situations as necessary, have strong organization skills, and an attention
to detail.   

 

Application Details:

 

Expected wage is $12/hour, with a 30-hour work week (includes some
weekends), from 27 May to 30 August, 2013. Dates are dependent on grant
funding and may be revised. 

 

Applicants must be between the ages of 16-30; have been a full-time student
within a post-secondary institution in the semester preceding their job with
YCW and returning to school full time in the fall; and be eligible to work
in Canada. They must also be willing to commit to the full duration of the
work assignment and not have another full-time job while employed with Young
Canada Works. Candidates must also be registered in the YCW online candidate
