Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel
“Style is everything, George. It helps you get up in the morning, it helps you get down the stairs. Without it you’re nobody. And I’m not talking about a lot of clothes.”- Diana Vreeland, in conversation with biographer George Plimpton
Lisa Immordino Vreeland, Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt and Frédéric Tcheng’s 2012 biographical documentary about the legendary fashion editor and columnist opened at Vancity Theatre on January 25^th as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival. SMOC's own Ivan Sayers introduced the film for its Vancouver debut. The Eye Has to Travel is a captivating blend of archival footage and of in-depth interviews with both Vreeland and those who knew her. A maverick of her time, Vreeland’s career catapulted her from fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar, to editor-in-chief of Vogue, to the position of special consultant for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, where she breathed new life into sartorial exhibitions. Vreeland was a self-made cultural icon whose influence encompassed fashion, music, art and design. This film about the life of a fascinating creative mind was released on DVD February 5^th.

What’s Old is New: Tales and Treasures from the SMOC Collection
The 2013 SMOC lecture series opened with the sold-out What’s Old is New: Tales and Treasures from the SMOC Collection, on January 13^th. Donning white gloves, guests were invited to explore new additions to the society’s collection at this hands-on event hosted by Ivan Sayers. This event also marked the introduction of a Best of 2012 pop-up museum, and of the society’s Adopt-an-Outfit program.
Adopt-an-Outfit aims to allow individuals or groups to contribute funds towards the restoration of garments in the SMOC collection. This year's gown is on display in Hycroft's Lett room, and is SMOC's first satellite exhibit! Throwing Down the Thank You Gauntlet
SMOC would like to extend a special thank you to the Vancouver Quilter's Guild, which generously lent gloves to the Society for use at the pop-up museum white glove event What's Old is New. Attendees were given the opportunity to examine some of SMOC’s acquisitions from 2012, slipping on white cotton gloves from the Quilters’ Guild to these ends.

Hearts and Flowers: A History of Romance in Fashion
What would Valentine’s Day be without hearts and flowers? SMOC’s second lecture of the year explored the romantic rationale (and whimsy) behind fashionable choices of times past. Take a look at some of the stunning ensembles featured at this event here (http://ocms.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08a2cfa55acaa2eb1d8f0651e&id=2f90ec839b&e=e453d6a3cb) . Vancouver’s best-kept secret, SMOC’s Collectible Table, was rolled out for the sold-out event. Fabulous finds included antique lace, and beautiful vintage dickies and chemises.

Foot in the Door: Hearts and Flowers Door Prize Winner
Congratulations to Diane Park, winner of the Hearts and Flowers door prize, a chocolate stiletto!
Says Diane: "I attended your Hearts and Flowers fashion show last week and was very impressed by the event. I was even more impressed when I won the fabulous door prize of a chocolate shoe! It was decorated to perfectly compliment the vintage coat I was wearing, and the surreal nature of a chocolate shoe along side the shocking pink velvet made me think of Shiaparelli..."

The Business of Suits: Professional Wear for the Modern Woman
April 21st, 2013, 2-4PM
The idea of women's suits might bring to mind dull business attire or the serious garb of formal or dreary occasions, but this is a far cry from their initial reception. Suiting actually has feminist roots, and in the 1890s was considered a way of displaying gender equality. As suits found their way into a growing number of women's wardrobes, fabrics and cuts began to yield to more feminine and even glamorous styles. Join host Ivan Sayers as he explores the evolution of women's suiting at this live fashion show!

Invoking Venus: Feathers and Fashion
SMOC at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at UBC, February 7 - May 5, 2013
Visual artist Catherine Stewart and fashion historian Claus Jahnke team up with SMOC’s own Ivan Sayers in this exhibition of photo-based images and historical fashion pieces. Stewart’s intimate images of avian plumage evoke the relationship between feathered finery and courtship amongst birds. Juxtaposing these photos, Jahnke and Sayers’ vintage costume collections elicit the ways in which human adornment mimics avian mating behaviour.
Four talks will take place at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum through the duration of the exhibition. Click through (http://ocms.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08a2cfa55acaa2eb1d8f0651e&id=5bf17bf08e&e=e453d6a3cb) for more information or to purchase tickets. SMOC thanks Dr. Yosef Wosk for his generous contribution to promote the Invoking Venus lectures.
