Vernon Celebrates International Museum’s Day

The Vernon Public Art Gallery and the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives are
inviting guests, both members and non-members of all ages to celebrate
International Museum’s Day on Saturday, May 18th.

The Gallery and Museum have partnered in an event called Art and Artifacts,
which highlights two main components found in museums; contemporary art and
historical artifacts. It may surprise some people to know that the Gallery
is in fact a museum, and it’s events such as this that showcase what
Vernon’s cultural institutions are all about. 

“The Vernon Public Art Gallery is a member of the Canadian Museum’s
Association. In this regard, we are under the same category as the Vernon
Museum, the Science Centre or even a zoo. Our role as a public art gallery
is to provide an educational institution promoting and exhibiting regional,
national, and international visual arts. The Gallery also collects and
preserves artwork, and we are here to engage and inspire the public through
all visual art forms.” Said Dauna Kennedy Grant, Executive Director.

On May 18th, enjoy a free tour of the current exhibitions at the Vernon
Public Art Gallery, including a retrospective of a total of nine Joan
Heriot’s works from the VPAG permanent collection. The Gallery will offer
the opportunity for guests to produce their own screen printed T-shirt, by
donation. And of course, every good open house offers guests free cake! Join
VPAG in celebrating 68 years of service to the Okanagan.

On this same day, come to the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives and enjoy a
tour of the working print shop and find out all about our “working” 14-foot
tower clock. Discover what happens in the process of accessioning an
artefact. The museum is also offering an “Apple Label Contest” for the kids
with prizes for top three submissions. Also, Captain Shorts has been lost in
time but not forgotten, his Steam Engine will be up and running.

Both venues will offer a ½ price membership discount for guests that
purchase/renew both a VPAG and Vernon Museum membership on May 18th. The
Vernon Public Art Gallery is located at 3228 31st Ave. Vernon BC, and the
open house will run from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. The Greater Vernon Museum and
Archives is located at 3009 32snd Ave. Vernon BC, and they will be open from
10:00 am – 5:00 pm.
