A)   General Information


 

JOB TITLE:                 Museum Assistant

OTHER INFO:            The position of Museum Assistant is for the BC Sports
Hall of Fame. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is a non-for-profit society,
founded in 1966 to establish a permanent tribute to the outstanding
individuals, teams, and builders of sport in the province. The BC Sports
Hall of Fame is located in BC Place Stadium and has 15,000 square feet of
exciting exhibits displaying the passion and commitment of British
Columbia’s athletes. Visitors are able to share the vision of those who
achieved their dreams through dedication, talent and hard work. The BC

B)   Project Objectives


 

The major project that the Museum Assistant will work on is summer
programming.  Working closely with other program staff, the museum assistant
will fulfill a key role within the program planning process.  Steps in the
planning process include; competitive research, brainstorming, program
mapping, program creation, program piloting, creation of promotional
material, marketing booking, implementation and evaluation.  The Museum
Assistant helps the BC Sports Hal of Fame achieve its mission of “Honouring
the Past and Inspiring the Future.”

We have moved back into our newly renovated facility at BC Place stadium and
one of the key objectives of the job is for the Museum Assistant to deliver
exceptional customer service to all BC Sports Hall of Fame visitors. 

 

Measurable Outcomes:

Ø  Number of visitors to the BC Sports hall of Fame (can be compared to
previous years)

Ø  Number of summer programs delivered (can be compared to previous years)

Ø  Number of young people who participate in the summer program (can be
compared to previous years)

Ø  Guests surveys to establish level of visitor experience/satisfaction

 

Description of Tasks:

Key responsibilities include:

v  Front desk reception

v  Visitor liaison (ensure visitor have a positive and memorable experience

v  Tour guide (lead groups of children through the museum ensuring they have
a fun and safe experience during their visit.

v  Assist with the development of museum programming

v  Assist with Special Events

v  Assist with the promotion and marketing of the museum and its programs

Workplan:

The Museum Assistant is joining a staff team of nine. The 13 weeks in which
the Museum Assistant is a part of the staff team will be very busy. The
first two months will primarily involve working with school groups and
assisting in the development and marketing of a summer program for children.
The last two months will involve working with many tourists and leading
groups through the summer program.

A typical day for the Museum Assistant may include:

*	Open museum and prepare galleries for visitors
*	Prepare cash register for the day
*	Welcome visitors and explain the best way in which to experience the
BC Sports hall of Fame.
*	Assist visitors on an as need basis, for example help them find
local transit, restaurant, other tourist attraction.
*	Answer phone, assist caller if possible and direct calls to the
appropriate staff member
*	Participate in staff meeting.
*	Close the museum and perform closing procedures for the cash
register and attendance forms.

 

 


C)   Employability Skills


 

As a key member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame the Museum Assistant will
learn many valuable skills and experience a unique work environment.
Specific skills the job experience will help to develop include:

v  Verbal and written communication

v  Formal telephone etiquette and procedures

v  Marketing and promotions

v  Presentation skills and group supervision

v  Opening and closing procedures

v  Cash register and financial transactions

v  Administrative tasks

v  Creative program development

v  Museum maintenance

 

 

Candidate Profile:

 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

v  Students returning to school in September

v  Available from June 3, 2013 – August 30, 2013. Must be able to work
flexible hours when requested. Must be comfortable in a busy environment and
be able to handle many different tasks.

v  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to relate well
with the public, children, Honoured members, staff members and volunteers.

v  Must be able to work within a team environment and independently from
time to time

v  Proficiency in Microsoft and Windows program.

v  Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, preferably in the
area of museums, tourism, education or recreation.

v  Experience working with the public, museums or children is an asset.

v  Interest or knowledge of sport or history is an asset but not required.

list and the BC Museum Association.

Depending on the approval for funding, job postings will be posted,
application deadline a week later and then the interview process will begin.

D)   Orientation and Supervision


Supervision

The BC Sports Hall of Fame is staffed by a team of nine, lead by the
Executive Director. The Museum Assistant will be a part of this team and be
directly supervised by the Executive Director. As a valuable part of the
staff team the Museum Assistant will participate in all staff meetings and
receive a thorough training of museum operations, including all safety
procedures. 

 

A basic outline of the Museum Assistant’s training includes the following:

v  General orientation of the BC Sports Hall of Fame 

v  Orientation package of all relevant resources for exhibits, basic history
and daily tasks

v  Overview of all safety procedures

v  Work closely with the Media Events Coordinator for the first week or
until the Museum Assistant is comfortable with the position.

v  Attend planning meetings for museum activities, special events and
programming

v  Participate in events which include the Trustees and Honoured Members of
the BC Sports Hall of Fame.

v  Attend any relevant meetings of association in which the BC Sports Hall
of Fame is a member such as Tourism Vancouver and the Vancouver Board of
Trade.

 

 

 


E)   Characteristics of City


 

The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located in BC Place Stadium which is located
in downtown Vancouver British Columbia. BC Place Stadium and the BC Sports
Hall of Fame are key destinations for visitors throughout tourist season.
The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located near the Vancouver Public Library,
Science World and Rogers Arena as well as many other popular attractions.
The Museum Assistant will experience the exciting atmosphere of a downtown
stadium as well as a busy tourist location. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is
easily accessible by car, bus and Skytrain (Stadium Station) and within
walking distance of the downtown centre.

v  Continue to recognize and honour those who have contributed to sport and
sport history of British Columbia

of British Columbia in hopes of inspiring them to participate in the sport
of their choice

v  Promote an understanding of courage, selflessness, and determination to
the youth of British Columbia

v  Collect, preserve and protect the artifact and archives representing over
