A) General Information

the BC Sports Hall of Fame. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is a non-for-profit
society, founded in 1966 to establish a permanent tribute to the outstanding
individuals, teams, and builders of sport in the province. The BC Sports
Hall of Fame is located in BC Place Stadium and has 15,000 square feet of
exciting exhibits displaying the passion and commitment of British
Columbias athletes. Visitors are able to share the vision of those who
achieved their dreams through dedication, talent and hard work. The BC

B) Project Objectives
The Archival/Curatorial Assistant will play a key role within the BC Sports
Hall of Fame. Part of the mandate of the BC Sports Hall of Fame is to
collect, preserve and protect the Hall of Fames artifact and archival
collections which represent over a century of BC sporting heritage and
celebrate the accomplishments of our honoured athletes and honoured teams.
The Archival/Curatorial Assistant will work with the curator to complete,
update and upgrade the BC Sports Hall of Fame collection database. Various
display cases will be re-themed and rotated. The Archival/Curatorial
Assistant will play a key role in this project. The Archival/Curatorial
Assistant will also support the BC Sport Heritage Program which takes
portion of the BC Sports Hall of Fames collection out into the community.
Tasks and responsibilities for this position will be to assist in the
research, design, layout, installation and hosting at various off site
events.
Measurable Outcomes:
Ø Number of research requests answered
Ø Number of recent acquisitions collection items catalogued and databased
Ø Number of new display set-ups completed
Ø Number of hosting at off-site events in the community
Description of Tasks:
Key responsibilities include:
v Assist curator with various daily tasks as needed such as cataloguing new
acquisitions
v Assist in the general care and handling of the BC Sports Hall of Fame
artifact and archival collections
v Assist curator with inventory control
v Assist curator with minor conservation tasks
v Assist curator with a review of the exhibit content to ensure integrity
of the items on display
v Update Honoured Member profiles on the website
v Respond to requests for research and photos from the public using both
telephone and email
v Assist with the BC Sport Heritage Program as required.
Workplan:
The Archival/Curatorial Assistant is joining a staff team of nine. The 13
weeks in which the Archival/Curatorial Assistant is a part of the staff team
will be very busy. The initial few weeks will entail training and
orientation. The remaining weeks will be scheduled according to the needs
and timeline of the various projects we have.
C) Employability Skills
As a key member of the BC Sports Hall of Fame the Archival/Curatorial
Assistant will learn many valuable skills and experience a unique work
environment. Specific skills this job experience will help to develop
include:
v Collection organization and management
v Conservation
v Exhibit maintenance
v Cataloguing
v Inventory controls
v Time management
The Archival/Curatorial Assistant will acquire fundamental skills needed in
any workplace surrounding, such as project management, meeting deadlines,
and working with various computer database programs. These skills can be
acquired through the cataloguing and organizing of the collection. Personal
management skills are acquired through working independently and managing
the time spent on the project. In some cases there may be a deadline to
have the project completed. Over the course of this work period, the
Archival/Curatorial Assistant will learn to work within the dynamics of a
group.
Candidate Profile:
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
v Students returning to school in September
v Available from June 3- August 30. Must be able to work flexible hours
when requested. Must be comfortable in a busy environment and be able to
handle many different tasks.
v Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
v Must be able to work within a team environment and independently from
time to time
v Currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, preferably in the
area of museum studies
v Interest or knowledge of sport or history is an asset but not required

D) Orientation and Supervision
The BC Sports Hall of Fame is staffed by a team of nine, lead by the
Executive Director. The Archival/Curatorial Assistant will be a part of this
team and be directly supervised by the Curator. As a valuable part of the
staff team the Archival/Curatorial Assistant will participate in all staff
meetings and receive a thorough training of museum operations, including all
safety procedures.
A basic outline of the Archival/Curatorial Assistants training includes the
following:
v General orientation of the BC Sports Hall of Fame
v Orientation package of all relevant resources for exhibits, basic history
and daily tasks
v Overview of all safety procedures
v Work closely with the curator to outline daily task and work schedule
v Supervised by Curator and ultimately the Executive Director
v Attend weekly staff meeting
The Archival/Curatorial Assistant will shadow the Curator for a couple of
days and then work on the different projects that is provided. He/she will
work closely with the Curator, they will work side by side for the majority
of the project.
E) Characteristics of City
The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located in BC Place Stadium which is located
in downtown Vancouver British Columbia. BC Place Stadium and the BC Sports
Hall of Fame & Museum are key destinations for visitors throughout tourist
season. The BC Sports Hall of Fame is located near the Vancouver Public
Library, Science World and Rogers Arena as well as many other popular
attractions. The Museum Assistant will experience the exciting atmosphere of
a downtown stadium as well as a busy tourist location. The BC Sports Hall of
Fame is easily accessible by car, bus and Skytrain (Stadium Station) and
within walking distance of the downtown centre.
