Large solo exhibition by Vancouver-based artist Keith Langergraber opens at the Kelowna Art Gallery

Keith Langergraber: Theatre of the Exploding Sun
October 5 to December 29, 2013

September 19, 2013 - Kelowna, BC: Visitors to this ambitious solo exhibition of work by Vancouver-based artist Keith Langergraber will be able to watch a trilogy of films, each screened in a discrete viewing area, and can also explore fascinating sculptures, photographs, and drawings installed in the exhibition spaces.

The work in Keith Langergraber: Theatre of the Exploding Sun is situated in Sci Fi culture and the three-part film, titled, Time Traveller Trilogy, apes the form of sci-fi fan films. A complicated story weaves throughout the trilogy, with scenes shot in such varied locales as the Cayman Islands, the Yukon, Great Salt Lake in Utah, Lake Okanagan, Mono Lake in California, and Pavilion Lake in BC. The first film, called Theatre of the Exploding Sun contains sequences from a site near Kamloops known as the Eye of Jupiter, as well as scenes filmed at Robert Smithson's distinctly recognizable Spiral Jetty. The second film, called You Can't Go Home Again, shifts focus and makes reference to the real-life story of Donald Crowhurst and his failed and fatal 1968 attempt to sail around the world in a small boat. Langergraber's third film titled, The Glass Island, explores Dr Who fandom and Robert Smithson's never-realized Glass Island project. Intriguingly, an installation of glass shards in the gallery makes reference to both this project, as well as the The Keys of Marinus episode of the Dr Who series.

A full-length colour catalogue has been produced to accompany the exhibition, with texts by Kelowna Art Gallery curator, Liz Wylie, along with essays by Southern Alberta Art Gallery director/curator, Ryan Doherty, Vancouver-based art historian and critic, Charlotte Townsend-Gault, and Victoria-based artist, writer and curator, Peter Morin. A text by Keith Langergraber, writing as Eton Corrasable, is also included.

An opening reception to celebrate this exhibition will be held on Friday, October 4, 2013, from 6:30 to 9 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. This will be a free event, open to members and guests, by invitation. Artist Keith Langergraber will be in attendance and will offer remarks at 6:30 pm.

On Wednesday, October 16, 2013, from 6 to 9 pm, Langergraber hosts a special workshop for youth ages 13 to 18, entitled Creating a Zine. Following a tour of his exhibition, Langergraber will lead a hands-on drawing activity, as well as an exploration of zines, comic books, and storyboards. This workshop is free, but space is limited so register early.

Langergraber will join four other participants for Quick Talks on Thursday, October 17, 2013, at 7 pm, at the Kelowna Art Gallery. Guests will speak for ten minutes on the intersection of art and technology in their practices, and the future of art in a digital world. This event is free and open to the public.

On Friday, October 25, 2013, join us for a Halloween GO Party! entitled ALIENS and '80s. This fundraiser's theme has been inspired in part by Keith Langergraber: Theatre of the Exploding Sun, which will be on view for guests attending. ALIENS and '80s is a ticketed event for ages 19+.

Keith Langergraber: Theatre of the Exploding Sun was produced in partnership with the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge and will be on view from October 5 to
December 29, 2013.

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located at 1315 Water Street in downtown Kelowna. For more information about current exhibitions, public programming or special events, please visit the Kelowna Art Gallery online at www.kelownaartgallery.com or call 250-762-2226.
