Vernon Public Art Gallery

New Community Mosaic Celebrates Respect and Diversity

Where: Patchwork Farms at Okanagan College, 7000 College Way, Vernon BC.

When: Saturday, April 26, 1 - 2 pm

Why: New Public Art Piece Created by Local Youth and Community Partners

Who: Vernon Public Art Gallery

The Vernon Public Art Gallery, in partnership with the Okanagan Respect
Network and Social Planning Council for the North Okanagan, is pleased to
invite the public to attend the grand unveiling of a new public art piece
located at Patchwork Farms community garden, at Okanagan College. Funding
for this project was provided by the Province of BC through the Embrace BC
Program.

Dauna Kennedy, Executive Director of the Vernon Public Art Gallery, says "We
are very pleased to have the opportunity to partner with other community
organizations in facilitating this unique public art piece. It was an
occasion for youth to learn about respect, then take that knowledge and
interpret it in a creative way for our community to enjoy".

The Vernon Public Art Gallery contracted local artist, designer, and gallery
owner Carolina Sanchez de Bustamante, to work with 14 youth participants in
creating their own handmade ceramic tiles during an open workshop in
February. With guidance from Annette Sharkey, Executive Director of the
Social Planning Council for the North Okanagan, participants learned and
shared about what respect looks like in our communities.

"We are very excited that local youth were able to express though art the
importance of "respect" in our community", she says. Their personal
expressions and visual interpretations of the theme, Respect Lives Here,
will contribute to the larger mosaic piece being installed at the covered
sitting area of Patchwork Farms, located on the Vernon campus of Okanagan
College.

The public is invited to the grand unveiling of the Respect Lives Here
community mosaic between 1 and 2pm at the new Patchwork Farms community
garden, located at the Vernon campus of Okanagan College.
