Special events make for a busy September at the Royal BC Museum

VICTORIA, BC - Visitors to the Royal BC Museum can expect a wide variety of new and exciting events in the month of September, making for truly special museum experiences.

Vikings ParTEA with Silk Road on Thursday, September 25 at 7 pm features Silk Road's tea mixing master Daniela Cubelic and Little Jumbo mixologist Shawn Soole spinning Norse culture into tea-infused cocktails. Using local liquor from Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub, Victoria Spirits and Tugwell Creek Meadery, guests will learn from live demonstrations how to make these original mixes while enjoying a fun and social event with a Viking twist.

Tickets include canapes, Royal BC Museum tea and one feature cocktail, along with exclusive recipes. There will be a cash bar for additional cocktail creations. Tickets are $55, with 10 per cent off for members. Event is 19+ only and does not include admission to the museum or the Vikings exhibition.

Live @ Lunch: Vikings in the Northern Sphere will see Royal BC Museum Curator of Archaeology Grant Keddie providing an overview of Viking events from Britain to Iceland, Greenland and Canada, as revealed by the archaeological and historic evidence of Norse activities.

This free event will take place in Newcombe Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at noon.

The Royal BC Museum will be one of the many venues for the Victoria International Chalk Art Festival. With the floor of Clifford Carl Hall as her canvas, Los Angeles artist Tracy Lee Stum, with the assistance of local First Nations artist Jamin Zuroski, will be creating a 3D chalk art work in line with the festival's First Nations theme of Nature's Spirits.

The process will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 10, with the piece set to be completed on Sunday, Sept. 14 and on display until Wednesday, Sept. 17.

When was the last time you really listened to the sounds all around you, and heard the complexities and richness of the soundscape of nature, the city and the museum? At the Music for Natural History Sound Workshop, participants will join composers and intermedia artists Tina Pearson and Paul Walde for an afternoon of sound exploration, with the aim of becoming more intimately aware of your environment.

This Saturday, September 20 event is $45 per person, with a 10 per cent discount for members.

On Tuesday, September 23 the University of Victoria's Dr Erin McGuire will return to the Royal BC Museum for one last time to dive even deeper into to Viking culture. "Whim rules the child": Archaeological Evidence for Childhood in the Viking Age will look at the lives of Norse children during the Middle Ages, bringing together diverse evidence from across the Viking World in an attempt to piece together this elusive aspect of Viking culture. The main focus will be archaeological material from places like Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, the Faeroe Islands and Iceland.

The lecture is $16 per person, with a 10 per cent discount for members.

The BC Archives Boot Camp on Saturday, September 27 helps familiarize hobby historians on how to best use the archives, while giving them a special behind the scenes tour. Participants will leave knowing more about our archival collections and how to put them to work to answer your questions about BC history. This workshop will also help genealogists who are interested in finding out more about their BC connections.

The format for the day will include a tour, group sessions and time at the end of the day to work individually on your own project with members of our team of archivists and access specialists.

The cost for the workshop is $45 and pre-registration is required, and will close one week before the event. Previous boot camps have sold out, so register early at royalbcmuseum.bc.ca.

September's Wonder Sunday, running on the 28th, will wonder about Viking mythology and symbolism. Participants will explore the lives of Vikings through this interactive, learning-based special event, which is geared towards families. Wonder Sunday runs from 1 to 3 pm, and is free with admission or membership.
