*The Friends of Fort Steele are currently seeking Blacksmiths for our
summer season. *
The role of the Blacksmith is to interpret and demonstrate the life and
work styles of a typical blacksmith in rural 1890's. The Blacksmith is
responsible for delivering interpretive content to educational groups as
well as thousands of tourists in the historical Barr & Comb's Blacksmith
Shop at Fort Steele Heritage Town. Additionally the Blacksmith operates a
modernized blacksmithing shop on site to support the production of retail
and consignment products sold to benefit the Friends of Fort Steele.
*Successful candidates will have:*
- High School diploma and trade certification in a relevant field as
well as work experience as a Blacksmith preferred or a combination of
relevant experience and training
· Ability to interpret the life and work of a typical blacksmith in
a rural 1890 community (of early North American-European content)
· Knowledgeable in all aspects of blacksmithing techniques as well
as the tools used by Blacksmiths
· Strives to complete Journeyman or Blacksmith status as described
per ABANA standards using both coal/propane forges would be an asset
· Supports blacksmith theory and demonstrates the methods used by
historical blacksmiths
· Competent in the use of standard-related tools and equipment in
both a historical shop and modern production shop
- Strong understanding and interest in the history of the blacksmithing
trade
- Ability to conduct historical research related to this role
- Knowledgeable in WorkSafe BC standards, promotes safety and adheres to
all safety standards
- Excellent communication and organizational and creative thinking
skills
- Ability to work well independently on several projects concurrently
- Background in a MS Windows environment (word, excel, PowerPoint,
publisher) would be an asset
- Experience with customer service in a non-profit environment
- Requires a positive attitude, collaborative and team focused work style
