Exploring Themes and Selected Works from Unreal
Quick Talks at the Kelowna Art Gallery
Wednesday, January 29, from 7 to 9 pm
January 23, 2014 - Kelowna, BC:, The Kelowna Art Gallery presents Quick Talks on Wednesday, January 29, from 7 to 9 pm, in conjunction with our current exhibition, Unreal.
Quick Talks will be moderated by Dr. Robert Belton, Associate Professor of Art History, Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, UBCO, and author of the book, The Beribboned Bomb: The Image of Women in Male Surrealist Art. Belton's research has focused on Surrealist art and film, Canadian art and architecture, and issues of art theory. He will be starting the evening by illuminating works and themes from the exhibition, Unreal.
Unreal contains work by twenty-eight artists who explore beyond the realm of what is considered real. The works are grouped by sub-theme: The Unconscious, The Haunted, The Absurd, and The Disassembled. Some of the artists included have never been on exhibition in Kelowna before, for example, Irish-born painter Francis Bacon, and American photography-based artist Cindy Sherman.
Joining Dr. Belton on the panel will be Okanagan-based artist Julie Oakes, along with Kelsie Balehowsky, and Malcolm McCormick, two emerging artists who are currently students at UBCO.
Each panelist will speak for ten minutes about a selected work from the exhibition, and discuss how it has influenced their artistic practice. Talks will be back-to-back, after which our moderator will field questions from the panel and audience. Quick Talks are free and open to the public.
Unreal is organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery with the generous support of the Killy Foundation. Curated by Daina Augaitis, Chief Curator/Associate Director, Vancouver Art Gallery.
Unreal will be on view at the Kelowna Art Gallery until March 9, 2014
