Maritime Museum of BC invites British Columbians to celebrate
125th anniversary of Supreme Courthouse

In 1889, dignitaries gathered to unveil the newly minted Supreme Courthouse in Bastion Square. One hundred and twenty five years later, with the Maritime Museum as its resident, the public is invited to celebrate the courthouse which was BC's first major public building built after confederation.

"We are so privileged to present BC's maritime culture in a building that has been part of British Columbia's history dating back to 1889. Being a National Historic Site, the building is part of who we are as British Columbians," says Jonathan Irwin, Executive Director at the Maritime Museum of BC.

At the opening of the building on Feb 1, 1889, in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Hugh Nelson and Victoria's most elite, Chief Justice Matthew Baillie Begbie made a speech comparing the building's splendor to his former method of dispensing justice in the open air with only a tree stump for an official bench.

To celebrate the 125th anniversary, the Maritime Museum will be offering $1.25 admission and free cupcakes to the first 125 people to visit the Museum on Saturday, Feb 1, 2014. Two separate tours will also be offered each starting at 11am and 1pm on the history of the courtroom and another on the architecture of the building. The Maritime Museum is open from 10am to 5pm.
