Museum Move Specialist
North Vancouver Museum & Archives Commission
(temporary, up to 38 weeks, 4 days/week)
The North Vancouver Museum and Archives is seeking a qualified Museum Move Specialist to help prepare the Museum collection to move to a new storage facility. The North Vancouver Museum has a collection of over 20,000 artifacts associated with the community of North Vancouver, including objects related to the historic Moodyville town site, the development of the waterfront and the shipbuilding industry, outdoor recreation, North Shore households, municipal transportation, local First Nation activities, and notable citizens. Move readiness is the next-to-last stage of a multi-year project, which has also included making documentation accessible, inventorying NVMA’s collection, and deaccessioning up to 6,000 objects which do not fit the collecting plan or mandate of NVMA.
The position:
Reporting to the Collections Manager, the Museum Move Specialist will undertake a variety of tasks relating to the packing of the museum’s artifact collection, and preparations leading up to moving the collection. Responsibilities are to:
Research best practices and maintain up-to-date knowledge of packing, shipping, storage, and mount making techniques for various types of objects and materials found in the NVMA collection.
Be knowledgeable of and implement NVMA collection and conservation policy and procedures, and more generally, professional museum standards, practices and procedures of preventive conservation.
Train staff and volunteers, in best practices for artifact packing and move preparation.
Assesses, recommends, design and build specialized mounts, and supports.
Research and recommend the best quality packing and mountmaking methods and supplies for the project needs.
Participate in packing the NVMA collection.
Prepare a packing and moving manual as reference for the NVMA.
Conduct related research at the request of the Museum Collections Manager.
Participate in collection and NVMA wide meetings as required
Qualifications:
The successful applicant will have completed a bachelor’s degree in a related field, one year of post-secondary education in museum collection management or conservation (preferred), and two years of relevant professional experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Excellent knowledge of preventive conservation, artifact care and handling, preparation of artifact supports, and museum move procedures is expected. The successful applicant must have the ability to maintain accuracy under pressure and deadlines. The ability to lift 50lbs and to climb stairs is required. The applicant must possess excellent interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and written and spoken English language skills. Experience supervising temporary staff and volunteers is an asset. A clean BC driver’s license is required for this position, as well as the ability to pass a criminal record check.
Work period: August 18, 2014 until approximately May 15, 2015. End of term will be determined by actual costs, as this position is funded by a grant from the Museums Assistance Program.
The incumbent will be required to take unpaid leave the week of December 22-26, 2014.
Work Week: 28 hours per week, Tuesday to Friday
Criminal Record Check: Mandatory
Salary: $23.81 (PG16-1) (2013 rate) plus 12% in lieu of benefits, statutory holidays and vacation pay.
