[BCMA] The FRDC Supports Fraser River Flood and Risk Management Efforts

FRDC SUPPORTS FRASER RIVER FLOOD AND RISK MANAGEMENT EFFORTS
"Offers Facility for Public Discussion and Information Sharing"

New Westminster, BC -The Fraser River Discovery Centre (FRDC) is a strong supporter of this week's two announcements regarding the protection and management of economic risks related to the Fraser River.  The first - by the Fraser Basin Council - related to the need for a comprehensive flood management strategy. The second was a report released by regional Chambers of Commerce that identified $50 billion in economic risks to the Fraser River.

Both initiatives are very timely for the Fraser River Discovery Centre which is currently working on the development of a long term exhibit and education program based on sustainable economic activity in the Lower Fraser.

"As the Voice of the Fraser River, we fully support both of these important initiatives," said Catherine Ouellet-Martin, Executive Director of FRDC. "We pay close attention to anything that potentially impacts the environmental, economic or social future of the Fraser River and we want to support positive outcomes through public, fact-based education on these important matters."

In addition, FRDC offered up its facility in New Westminster as a site for potential public consultation, discussion or information sharing.

"One of our roles is to be a public convener on all issues and activities related to the Fraser River," added Ouellet-Martin. "We would welcome any opportunities to host discussions or information exchanges related to flood management and how to best manage the economic risks to the mighty Fraser River."


The Fraser River Discovery Centre Society operates the Fraser River Discovery Centre. Through interactive exhibits and engaging programming, the Discovery Centre showcases the Fraser River's role in shaping BC's ecological, cultural and economic diversity. Its mission is to be the Voice of the Fraser in presenting the stories of the Fraser River and their contribution to the life, history and future of British Columbia with the vision of connecting communities in discovery and celebration of the living, working Fraser River. The Discovery Centre is open daily, 10am to 6pm. Admission to the exhibit galleries is by donation.
