Decolonize Me Artist Talk @ 6:30 pm by Jordan Bennett

"The Vernon Public Art Gallery is pleased to present two new exhibitions
opening next week. Decolonize Me and We Are Still Here will run from July
31st through to October 8th. We are happy to be able to bring such a
significant show here to the VPAG for our local community to enjoy. The
exhibition includes Decolonize Me put together by the Ottawa Art Gallery,
along with We Are Still Here, an exhibition comprised of local Okanagan
First Nations artists. Please join us at the opening reception on Thursday
July 31 from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm at the art gallery."

-Dauna Kennedy Grant, VPAG Executive Director

Decolonize Me

July 31 - October 8, 2014

Sonny Assu, Jordan Bennett, Cheryl L'Hirondelle, Nigit'stil Norbert, Barry
Pottle, and Bear Witness

"Decolonize Me features six contemporary Aboriginal artists whose works
challenge, interrogate and reveal Canada's long history of colonization in
daring and innovative ways. Deliberately riffing on the title of Morgan
Spurlock's film, the pop-cultural phenomenon Super Size Me (2004), the
exhibition's title emphasizes the importance of recognizing the role of the
individual within larger discussions of shared colonial histories and
present-day cultural politics. In the context of the recent efforts of many
Indigenous communities to assert their sovereignty and right to
self-determination, the artists in this exhibition explore the issues and
outcomes of both colonization and decolonization while exposing how these
processes have impacted Aboriginal and settler Canadian identity, both
individual and collective."

-Heather Igloliorte, Ottawa Art Gallery Curator

The VPAG exhibition Decolonize Me is proudly sponsored by Summit
Environmental.

"Decolonize Me is a contemporary critical evaluation of Canadian history
told through the lens of First Nations Artists. "

-Lubos Culen, VPAG Curator

Kama? Creative Aboriginal Arts Collective

Creative Aboriginal Arts Collective Society

Reflections on Culture and Identity

The name "Kama? Creative" in short form is derived from the Okanagan word
S?at qw(l)p kama? (Pine Needle) It is used by the artist members to
symbolically represent the traditional landscape where the artists reside.
The Collective is comprised of Okanagan Nation established and emerging
artists who have come together to support aboriginal interdisciplinary and
multimedia arts development, promotion, education/community involvement and
production.

The newly formed arts collective in this exhibition brings together four
artists from the Okanagan Indian Band (Suknaqinx). Their works of art are a
collection of contemporary visual art perspectives of various aspects of how
each artist is looking at the Sylix life over time. Each artist takes their
own look at culture and self-identity through their art work. Barbara P.
Marchand's work speaks of the deeper emotions and traditional lives of the
first people that inspire her work; Mariel Belanger takes the spirit of what
it means to be Sylix through the view of the traditional Quilstan or
sweathouse and represents a pattern in the rebirth of identity. Sheldon
Louis' paintings are a study of the impact of residential school and how he
has experienced the effects as a youth himself. Dean Louis explores the
Okanagan people today through his graphic design practice.
