JOB POSTING: Reference Historian
Part-time (4 days /week), limited-term (9 months) position for Maternity Leave Replacement

The North Vancouver Museum & Archives (NVMA) is seeking to fill a temporary Reference Historian position. The successful candidate will provide public service in the Archives' Research Room and outreach services to promote awareness of the organization and its collections. The NVMA, one of British Columbia's leading community museum and archives, acquires and promotes the use of materials which document the historical, social, economic, political and cultural history of North Vancouver.

Under the guidance of the Archivist and the Assistant Director, the Reference Historian will undertake a variety of archival and program-based duties aimed at assisting researchers, and promoting effective use of the Archives' resources. Duties will include on-site and remote reference assistance, facilitating public and staff access to, and use of, the collection.  This includes: providing photo order and scanning services; supervising volunteers; managing some print and social media initiatives; and assisting with school programs. An ongoing oral history program will be maintained. Additionally the Reference Historian may plan and create small displays, maintain clippings files, compile statistical reports concerning attendance and sales matters, and assist with some collections management activities.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys working with the public and the local community to promote access to and knowledge of the NVMA's archival collection.

Qualifications:

*         Undergraduate degree (minimum) in a relevant discipline including coursework in history, education, archival studies, librarianship, public history or cultural resource management;

*         Excellent interpersonal skills and desire to help others pursue their research and learning interests;

*         Experience in an archives or museum setting;

*         Aptitude for public service and detail oriented work;

*         Strong computer, scanning, Photoshop skills and facility with social media platforms;

*         Ability to provide image scans suitable for variety of applications including exhibits, publications;

*         Demonstrated excellence with written communications;

*         An interest in children's educational programs;

*         Knowledge of archival practices an asset;

*         An ability to lift and move materials of up to 40 pounds weight and to climb stairs;

*         Current and valid BC Driver's License desirable;

*         Limited to Canadian citizens, permanent residents or individuals with a valid work visa.


Work Period:  July 22nd (or as soon as available), 2014 until approximately April 24, 2015 (applicants should be aware that a maternity leave can end at any time upon provision of one month's written notice).  The Archives will be closed for at least one week during the Christmas/New Year's break and the incumbent will be required to take unpaid leave during that time.
Work Week: 28 hours per week (Tuesday to Friday with one evening shift on the second Wednesday of each month except July and August)

Salary:  $23.81 (PG16-1) (2013 rate) Plus 12% in lieu of benefits, statutory holidays and vacation pay.
