Following is a job posting for the position of Public Programs Coordinator - Adult Programs.
VANCOUVER ART GALLERY ASSOCIATION
PART-TIME POSITION AVAILABLE
PUBLIC PROGRAMS COORDINATOR - ADULT PROGRAMS
Reporting to the Chief Curator/Associate Director, the incumbent will utilize knowledge and experience of the visual arts, critical theory, art history and a broad awareness of other creative practices and culture to conceive, develop, produce and promote programs in order to engage adult audiences who have both specialized and broad interests.
The events will vary in format ranging from gallery talks and exhibition tours to conferences and formal lectures. They will consist of both in-gallery, off-site and online productions.
The incumbent must have experience conceptualizing, hosting and orchestrating public discourse with a clear understanding and interest in how critical discussion is occurring both within the gallery and beyond. The incumbent must understand how to contextualize the exhibitions and develop live discussions in the gallery. They must hold a strong knowledge of the local and international art context and have a wide breath of connections with cultural practitioners, other institutions, organisations and creative companies. They must have the ability to draw from this comprehensive knowledge to conceive innovative and critically stimulating public discussion for both art specialists and generalists. They must have the ability to build on their relationships and the Gallery's networks to further develop partnerships locally and internationally with the aim of working collaboratively whenever possible. The results of your work will raise the profile of the Vancouver Art Gallery's public programs locally, nationally and internationally.
DUTIES
Duties will include the following: conceptualizing events and clearly communicating their overall goals in line with the institution's larger strategies; maintaining mailing lists, writing copy and contributing to plans for marketing the events; project-management and delivery of lectures, educational events, academic and specialist conferences, gallery talks and other programs; conceiving of the critical framework for discussion, at times for online access and distribution; inviting, briefing, guiding and hosting speakers; managing a core group of volunteers who assist in the delivery of events; managing established budgets and developing grant proposals; coordinating logistics and managing internal briefings; developing and maintaining relationships with community groups, arts and cultural institutions, as well as individuals locally, nationally and internationally; assisting in the development of a web presence and on-line archive; and the continual contribution to the creative and intellectual strategy of public programs at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
University graduate with at least a Bachelor's level in an arts related field from a recognized university plus three years related experience as a curator, arts educator or public programmer in an art gallery/museum or educational environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An in-depth knowledge of critical theory, museum education, visual art, art history, creative practices and contemporary culture; comprehensive knowledge of the local, national and international academic and artistic communities; excellent writing skills; an ability to communicate complex ideas effectively to a range of audiences; ability to manage several projects simultaneously; to work calmly, creatively and effectively to meet deadlines; experience in managing budgets and people, timelines and schedules; strong public presentation skills; teaching experience is an asset.
SALARY: Pay Grade 23 Step 1, $27.08 per hour, plus benefits or a % in lieu
HOURS: 56 hours bi-weekly Flexible Work Schedule
