GREY CUP/FOOTBALL STORY IDEAS FOR MEDIA - the BC Sports Hall of Fame has
photos and artifacts supporting most of these stories:
1) Victoria's Paul 'Pappy' Rowe captained the 1948 Calgary Stampeders to
their very first Grey Cup championship, defeating the Ottawa Rough
Riders12-7. Rowe, one of the earliest British Columbians to win the Grey
Cup and one of the great plunging fullbacks of his day, was awarded the Dave
Dryburgh Memorial Trophy that season as the top scorer in the West Division.
2) 2014 marks the 60th Grey Cup since Vancouver first held the Grey Cup
championship in 1955 at newly-built Empire Stadium. This was only the
second Grey Cup held outside Ontario and the first held in western Canada.
The 39,000+ spectators that watched Edmonton defeat Montreal 34-19 was an
attendance record that lasted for over twenty years.
3) Also marking its' 60th anniversary is the BC Lions' fight song 'Roar
You Lions Roar' originally written in September 1954 by Edmonton's Peggy
Miller, a passionate Edmonton Eskimos fan who also wrote the Esks' fight
song. Miller based the music on the song 'I Love the Sunshine of Your
Smile.' The BC Sports Hall of Fame recently acquired Miller's original
handwritten sheet music to 'Roar You Lions Roar' as well as typewritten
lyrics. The first time this song was played at a Grey Cup was in 1963 when
the Lions fell to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 21-10 in front of a partisan BC
crowd at Empire Stadium. This game is remembered most for Tiger-Cat
linebacker Angelo Mosca's controversial hit that knocked Lions star running
back Willie Fleming out of the game.
4) Out of BC's six Grey Cup championships (1964, 1985, 1994, 2000, 2006,
2011), perhaps the most dramatic was the 1994 Lions' cinderella run. After
defeating heavily favoured Edmonton and Calgary on the final play of both
games, BC played host to Baltimore in the first-ever Canadian-American Grey
Cup final. Drama prevailed once again, as Vancouver's Lui Passaglia kicked
the winning field goal for BC with no time remaining on the clock to give
the Lions the 26-23 victory and keep the Grey Cup in Canada for another
season.
