Hi Tammy,
I remember seeing something like this in the Glenbow collection. I
think they are made by, or modelled after, traditional Zulu spears and
shields. The spear is called an assegai (I think) and the shield made of
cow-hide. If its not Zulu, it could be from the Masaai people of Kenya.
The shields size tells me it was probably for the tourist trade, and
perhaps the spears as well.

Hi, everyone out there in Museum-land,
We have recently been offered this small shield with two metal spear
tips (photo below).
All the donor can tell us is that she is from Claresholm, AB and the
shield was displayed on the wall of a house on Columbia Lake where she
grew up; the spear tips were always with it. The shield is 33 cm long
and the spear tips are 24 cm, and one has a broken wooden shaft.
I’m wondering if anyone can help us identify it – and an appropriate
home for it?
Thanks!
Tammy
