Caetani Centre launches 4 day November Novel Writing Workshop with Writer in Residence Laisha Rosnau
Saturdays, November 1, 15, 22 and 29, 2014 (no workshop Nov. 8)
1 – 4 pm
November is “National Novel Writing Month” (NaNoWriMo)!
Have novel in progress or a story just waiting to be told? Then this workshop is for you!
Aspiring writers are invited to take part in developing their novel writing and creative skills and receiving weekly feedback from a published and practicing professional writer.
In honour of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), join author, Laisha Rosnau, at the Caetani Cultural Centre for a month-long weekend series on how to write a novel. Learn how to plan for, plot, and structure a novel. Understand how to identify and coax the most compelling material, and how to build a world around it. Begin to develop and deepen characters, strengthen narrative voice and point of view. Create convincing settings and dialogue and write vivid descriptions. Over four workshops, we will foster idea generation, writing, and editing skills through instruction, writing workshops, and discussion. Craft issues will also be discussed and the exploration of fiction markets.
Laisha Rosnau is the author of the best-selling novel, The Sudden Weight of Snow, and three poetry collections, Pluck, Lousy Explorers, and Notes on Leaving. Her fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry has appeared in anthologies and magazines in Canada, the US, the UK and Australia. Her work has been nominated for several awards, including the Amazon/Books in Canada First Novel Award, three times for the CBC Literary Award, the Pat Lowther Memorial Award, and has won the Acorn-Plantos People's Poetry Award. Rosnau is currently working on a novel based on the storied history of the Caetani family in Vernon.
Rosnau holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia and a BA from the University of Victoria. She has taught creative writing, poetry and fiction at UBC Okanagan, Okanagan College, and the Vancouver Film School. She has coordinated the Vertigo Voices Reading Series at Gallery Vertigo, was a judge for the John Lent Poetry-Prose Award, Kalamalka Press; Okanagan Short Fiction Contest; and the Room Literary Magazine Fiction Contest.
Rosnau was a Reader, CBC/En Route Literary Award, Poetry Category in the Fall 2007, and has worked as the Associate Director, Booming Ground Writers’ Community, and as Executive Editor, PRISM international Literary Magazine.
Review of her work:
…Rosnau has exhibited a stunning debut. I am still wincing with identification and
recognition. The Sudden Weight of Snow is light and bright and sparkling with acidic
undertone. I’ll end with a quote from Rosnau, who merits the last word: “No new snow
had fallen. The ground shone, sun off taut skin, and I didn’t close the blinds, squinted into the glare.” Excerpt of Review of The Sudden Weight of Snow from The Toronto Star, June 23, 2002, Blinded by the light – reviewed by Patricia Robertson
The cost of the 4 day workshop is $25 for existing Caetani Members, and $50 for non-members (will include a membership). Participants can register on-line at www.caetani.ca.
This program is generously sponsored in part by a grant from the British Columbia Arts Council.
