Fresh Prints: Politics of Extraction
Wednesday, October 29, November 12, 26 and December 10
3:00 to 5:00 pm
This fall, the Kamloops Art Gallery introduces Fresh Prints, a new after-school printmaking program for youth and young adults facilitated by local printmaker and KAG art instructor Melaina Todd. Delivered in three-month thematic sessions, Fresh Prints meets bi-weekly in the Tricia Sellmer and Ken Lepin studios.
The inaugural session, Politics of Extraction, invites participants to think about ideas explored in the KAG's current exhibition, A Terrible Beauty: Edward Burtynsky in Dialogue with Emily Carr. Though working in different media and over fifty years apart, both Burtynsky and Carr sought to record the changing, industrialized landscape and our place within it. Over the course of the four classes, Todd will lead participants in discussions about the impacts of human enterprise on the landscape and how artists can explore these ideas in their own work.
No experience is necessary. Todd will demonstrate the basics of relief printmaking in the first class and guide participants to develop their skills over the course of the session as they each work to carve their image into a 12"x12" square of linoleum.
Fresh Prints: Politics of Extraction has space for 12 participants between the ages of 15-25. Interested artists are encouraged to register by calling the Gallery 250-377-2400.
Participation is free for members, $20/session for non-members.
Melaina Todd received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Thompson Rivers University in 2011. An active member of the Kamloops Printmakers' Society, Todd has provided assistance for printmaking students at TRU and demonstrated large-scale relief printing at South Kamloops Secondary School.
