This year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World
War. As part of Parks Canada’s national commemoration events, on Wednesday,
September 23, 2014, Fort Rodd Hill will begin sharing a collection of
letters from the Grant family, which detail the heart-wrenching story of an
ordinary family in British Columbia faced with World War I.

What was it like during wartime to anxiously wait for news of a loved one?
Back then, they didn’t have e-mail or instant messaging! Letters took
months to travel back and forth from Europe to Canada. Using historical
photos and letters sent between the siblings of the Grant family, Parks
Canada breathes new life into one-hundred year-old events. Experience the
nail-biting suspense of waiting for war letters from loved ones at home and
overseas. For forty-nine days, we will post a daily excerpt on the website,
Facebook and Twitter.

“Dearest Belle” commemorates the 100th anniversary of World War I, and we
need your help to share these letters across the country. The Grant family
letters provide a unique opportunity to connect with the First World War on
a deeper and more personal level. They are also a reminder of the thousands
of other young Canadians that headed off for war in Europe, and the
families they left behind. Their educational, historic and emotional value
is immeasurable.

Cette année marque le 100e anniversaire du début de la Première Guerre
mondiale. Dans le cadre des événements de commémoration nationale de Parcs
Canada, ce mercredi 23 Septembre 2014, Fort Rodd Hill commencera à partager
une collection de lettres de la famille Grant, qui détaillent l'histoire
déchirante d'une famille ordinaire en Colombie-Britannique face à la
Première Guerre mondiale.

Que ressentaient ceux qui, pendant la guerre, vivaient dans l’attente des
nouvelles d’un être cher? À cette époque, il n’y avait pas de courriels ni
de messages instantanés! Il fallait des mois pour que les lettres se
rendent de l’Europe au Canada et inversement. Avec des photographies et des
lettres historiques exclusives échangées par les membres de la famille
Grant, Parcs Canada fait revivre des événements vieux de 100 ans.  Venez
partager l’anxiété éprouvée par leurs proches au pays ou l’étranger à
l’attente de nouvelles venant du front. Pendant 49 jours, nous publierons
quotidiennement un extrait sur nos sites web, Facebook et Twitter.

"Chère Belle" commémore le 100e anniversaire de la Première Guerre
mondiale, et nous avons besoin de votre aide pour partager ces lettres à
travers le pays. Les lettres de la famille Grant offrent une occasion
unique de se connecter avec la Première Guerre mondiale à un niveau plus
profond et plus personnel. Elles nous font aussi nous souvenir des milliers
d'autres jeunes Canadiens qui sont partis pour la guerre en Europe, et les
familles qu'ils ont laissées derrière eux. Leurs valeurs éducatives,
historiques et affectives sont incommensurables.
