Hello Christina,
Self-directed can often be of less interest to teachers than a packaged program delivered by others at their schools. As we watched classes in Kitimat staying away due to funding cutbacks from the School District, the museum had to do something with our educational delivery. It is far easier for 4 museum staff/volunteers to visit schools than 24 students to visit us, so we head to the schools.
We have had success with engaging retired teachers as volunteers, joining museum staff to deliver the kits in the classroom. We send out the information about the kits to the schools and ask classroom teachers to book programs delivered by our museum education team. Once they book we contact our volunteer educators (many are retired teachers) to attend. The program kits with activities are delivered for the classes at their schools. We have had success obtaining volunteers through the retired teachers' association in our community and our museum members, as well as booking class visits within identified weeks for kits.
I hope this helps.
Louise

Subject: [BCMA] School program kits
Hello,
I work for the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site as the Educational Programmer. We are currently going through our annual review of our programs in preparation for the new school year. While we are successful with our on-site school program offers, there is very little demand for our education kits. These questions go out to all other school program coordinators or programmers who have education kits as a part of their offer: Are your education kits successful? Are there teachers and instructors interested in renting them? What makes them successful, in your opinion? Have any of you moved away from education kits (because you are having a similar experience) and are finding there are other ways to share your site's resources? I would love to hear from anyone who is willing to share their experiences with education kits whether they be positive or negative. I am just trying to gain some perspective on this and wonder whether there is another avenue I should be in investigating. Your feedback is much appreciated.
