The University Art Gallery Legacy Art Galleries assists the academic and cultural development of the university community by preserving and exhibiting art for the pursuit and communication of knowledge. As a leader in cultural and academic collaborations, Legacy Art Galleries reaches across disciplines, within and beyond the university to engage curiosity, inspire creativity, and foster research and learning through art.  Through its collection of approximately 20,000 objects and exhibition venues on and off campus, Legacy Art Galleries serves both the university and broader communities through exhibitions, programs, events, teaching, and research.

Reporting to the Director, the Art Collection Technician provides a range of technical, artistic, art preparatory, client service and operational support to the unit, at both on campus and at off-campus venues including the Legacy Art Gallery and Swans Hotel both in downtown Victoria.

In compliance with Canadian Conservation Institute standards and in order to maintain the University of Victoria Legacy Art Galleries' Category A designation, this position provides operational support in all aspects of art care, shipping, storage and vault maintenance, inventory tracking within the collections database, and exhibition preparation and installation.

The Art Collection Technician supports the unit in its public service role through the preparation and installation of artwork in Legacy exhibitions, the Art on Campus program and community loans, and by providing client support and access to the art for public and university clients for research and teaching. The Art Collection Technician contributes to the Legacy's stewardship role through collection care including safe art handling, shipping and storage; monitoring of environmental conditions where art is installed; and inventory control of the vault and works out on loan.
Job Requirements
Skills:

*        Have the ability to exercise a degree of independence of action and judgment through the execution of tasks and planning of daily work schedule
*        Strong organizational skills
*        Artistic and aesthetic sensitivity related to art installation and exhibition design
*        Proficient carpentry skills and confident use of hand tools and other work specific equipment such as temperature and humidity control readers and light meter
*        Ability to accurately follow instructions, including those oral and written
*        Careful and accurate attention to detail
*        Ability to maintain and deliver a high level of customer service
*        Skilled use of computers and software including MS Office, Internet navigation, and database input.
*        Ability to work with others to meet scheduled objectives
Work Environment:

*        Ability to effectively perform duties under occasional pressured conditions and with hard deadlines
*        Ability to work at heights and/or on elevated platforms and ladders
*        Ability to lift heavy objects
*        Ability to use tact, judgement in working with all levels of the university community
*        Ability and willingness to be trained and to apply follow WorkSafe BC practices when installing art, including safety in areas suspected to have hazardous materials in building materials (e.g. asbestos)
Specialized Knowledge/Education:

*        High level of working knowledge of art handling and care practices following national museum standards
*        Current knowledge of art installation methods and experience with art gallery lighting and environmental conditions
*        Training, education and related work experience in the field of art or museums
Experience:

*        Minimum three years experience with art handling, packing and installation experience in an art gallery or museum setting
Other requirements:

*        Constant mobility, stairs, bending, lifting, reaching and heavy lifting in performing the duties of the position require good physical health
Position requires performing duties at heights (ladders and lifts) including handling delicate and moderately heavy equipment at heights Position required to drive light vehicle in performing the duties, valid BC Driver's license is required.
