Good Morning
My name is David Phipps and I was born and live in Vancouver, BC. I have recently been donating various items to the Roedde House and Langley, BC Museums. I have also donated many items to the UBC Opera Division
1). I have a number of signed opera memorabilia collected across Canada and the US mostly from Singers that had some form of association with the Vancouver Opera (Sutherland, Zeani, Tebaldi) through productions (Le Roi de Lahore/Sutherland, Tosca, La Traviata/Zeani, Concerts - Tebaldi, Leontyne Price, Kathleen Battle, Te Kanawa, Caballe).
At the moment most of them are unframed and kept in plastic sleeves and I had proposed framing them for the recently renovated Old Auditorium out at the University. I would pay for the framing and preservation, if someone was interested in receiving and displaying them for a small tax receipt. I was not looking to make money on this endeavour, only to preserve theses pieces of music history interest. UBC was willing to take them but only as a donation.
They total 18 to 20 and range in size from small 5" X 7" to larger format 16" X 20" and in condition from fair/average to excellent. I can arrange to send photos of some of the autographs should someone be interested.
2). I also have various antique dishes from the 1900s-1920s that are in good to excellent condition that I would be willing to donate to a museum looking for such items. One is an almost complete set of Blue Willow (I need to do some research as to age, etc, but was led to believe that it was a wedding gift to a friend of the family that died in her 90s in the early 1960s). Others are various plates that I have received as gifts and have done some research on them.
I need to know fairly quickly as far as the framing of the Opera Memorabilia as I am leaving the country for a period of time in mid October. Or, this discussion can be put on hold and/or picked up next year when I return to Vancouver. Thanks again for your consideration.
Sincerely,
David Phipps1279 Nicola StreetVancouver, BC

Hi David, Sheila and I discussed that and thought the BC Museums Association would be a good starting point. If you send the description and photos of the Victrola to bcma at lists.vifa.ca, it will go out to a wide network of BC museums and cultural organizations. Instructions for posting can be found here: http://museumsassn.bc.ca/professional-development/link/bcma-resources/ . Hope this helps! See you tomorrow! We already have a Victrola on display and, as we have very limited storage space, we unfortunately wouldn’t have room for another one. The museum is open 11-4 today, so you’re welcome to drop by anytime it’s convenient for you. Many thanks, Annika Annika PennerMuseum Manager Maison Musée Roedde House Museum1415 Barclay Street, Vancouver, BC V6G 1J6T 604.684.7040Email : info at roeddehouse.org From: David P [mailto:davidnphipps at hotmail.com]

Subject: RE: Donations Hi Quickly took the pics before heading out. The gramophone is roughly 16 inches by 16 inches by about 8 inches when closed. The gramophone came from the Leggats. The match holder and inkwell both came from my Grandfather (they were from his parents) whose family had lived in the Cardiff, Wales area for many years (of english and welsh ancestry). My grand parents (Phipps) died in 1962 age 73 and 1976 age 80. dpFrom: info at roeddehouse.org

Once again any further information you have on the items’ history and past ownership would be great!Do you know when you’d be able to drop those off? I can pass them along to our collections manager Sue, and she could issue you a tax receipt that covers all of the donations.Cheers,Sheila From: David P [mailto:davidnphipps at hotmail.com]

Subject: RE: Donations Hi
Thanks for meeting with us and accepting the donations. I haven't been around the museum in years now and it looks like you have accumulated more furnishings than I last remember.

We have a few more items that you might be interested in
1). Portable victrola in its own carrying case supply of steel needles if I recall but can't remember the vintage I did look it up. This was from the Leggat family.
2) small brass and leather Victorian inkwell. This was from the English side of my Welsh ancestors.
3) small leather and brass match holder, same as number two.
If interested I can photograph and send them to you next week.
Cheers

Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2015 22:55:49 +0000Hello, here is what I know of the information you were looking for David Phipps#307-1279 Nicola StreetVancouver, BCV6G 2E8Tel: 604-687-2951 I inherited both these items (and some others) from Hendry Leggat who was living at the time on King Edward and Oak Street. From what I understand in talking with my parents in later years (I was 6 when "Uncle" Hendry died) the family had forbidden him to marry Elsa as she had fled Nazi Germany (was Jewish) and had lost the family money in the holocaust. They lived together until Hendry's death at which time the family antiques, etc, returned to the family. I believe he went by Mathew Hendry Leggat (MHL on the Parks Book 1925) and information can be found on google and in the book exploring Vancouver. I have a 1970s version and it lists the Leggat estate as being 1363 The Crescent. I inherited copies of family paintings and other paintings done by Elsa when she passed in 1981. Hendry had a large collection of 50s and 60s Met Opera recordings (live) and I inherited a number of them over the years plus travel brochures and Mount Vesuvius ash from the period 1912-1927. I also inherited a pedal sewing machine and a wind up Victrola portable record player and various cameras from the 1920s and 30s. The cameras have been donated, the pedal sewing machine I still have and use as a desk (the machine itself is stored) and the victrola I have along with 78s from the 30s-50s. Date: Fri, 14 Aug 2015 14:29:40 -0700Hello David, I’ve just heard back from our Collections Manager and we’d be very happy to accept these items for our collection. When would be a convenient time for you to bring them to the museum? We’re open Tuesday – Saturday from 11:00am – 4:00pm and on Sundays from 1:00 – 4:00pm. If you could bring any information you have about the objects and their previous ownership that would be great. I’ll also need your name and address for our records. Many thanks,Sheila Sheila GiffenMuseum Manager Maison Musée Roedde House Museum1415 Barclay Street, Vancouver, BC V6G 1J6T 604.684.7040Email : info at roeddehouse.org From: David P [mailto:davidnphipps at hotmail.com]

Subject: Donations Good Afternoon
I have two publications that the museum might be interested in receiving as a donation. One is The Standard, publish in 1918 documenting Canada's contribution to WWI and the other is Parks and Playgrounds in Vancouver 1925 bound in leather with the name Leggat (Leggat family home was on The Crescent). Both were from the Hendry Leggat estate from the early 1960s. All I am looking for is a small tax receipt. Thank you. David Phipps1279 Nicola StreetVancouver, Westend
