Native Art: Beyond Beads and Feathers
September 10th to October 23rd, 2015 (Mon – Fri 10am to 4pm; Culture Days
Weekend: Sept. 26-27 10am to 3pm)
Native Art: Beyond Beads and Feathers, a new exhibition at the Sncewips
Heritage Museum, brings to light one of the issues surrounding aboriginal
stereotypes in art and media. Young aboriginal artists feel boxed in as
there is an expectation on what many perceive as “Native Art”. Our goal is
to demonstrate that Native Art does not have to be traditional or
excessively representative; in fact Native Art has evolved into a more
contemporary style. Native youth are expressing themselves in more vibrant
and unique ways using a vast array of mediums while still maintaining their
cultural roots. With this exhibit, we hope to shed light on contemporary
Native Art so that the greater public realizes that culture is only one
aspect of a person and that Aboriginal artists are more than just beads and
feathers.

Uknaqin: What the Sncewips Heritage Museum is all about
Saturday and Sunday 10-11am; 1-2pm
The Sncewips Heritage Museum was established in 2014 to highlight the
dynamic cultural heritage of Westbank First Nation and to tell the stories
of the greater Syilx Nation and those of First Nation peoples across
Canada. We believe in the power of our own voice, the voice of the
community, to inspire, educate, and breakdown barriers and stereotypes. The
Museum values the strong collaborative ties that have been established and
how we connect and interact with our community and the communities around
us is what this presentation is all about.

Searching for Nqilxwcen/Our Indigenous language
Saturday and Sunday 11am – 12pm; 2 - 3pm
The nqilxwcen/nsyilxcen language is the original language for the
Indigenous peoples of this territory and what connects the people within
the Nation whose lands spans over 69 000 square kilometres. The Searching
for Nqilxwcen activity will work as a language scavenger hunt to engage the
participants with the language and the Sncewips Heritage Museum space to
exemplify the specific characteristics within each word in a way that
interacts with the exhibition and collections. This will be a fun, informal
activity to simply create awareness and appreciation for the language and
all the knowledge that is possessed within it.

The Trade Brigade
Evidence of people trading various items of worth for goods and services
can be traced back 150,000 years through human history. Trade in the
Okanagan between First Nation peoples was well established thousands of
years ago but it wasn’t until the 1530s, with the Fur Brigade, that trade
occurred with Europeans. This was a central part of the early history of
contact between Europeans and First Nation Peoples. Building on the
positive relationships that have been formed in the Okanagan, the Museums
on the Westside invite you to join the Trade Brigade.

Drop by the Sncewips Heritage Museum, have a look around (admission is
free) and when you are ready to head to your next Westside Culture Days
stop, purchase a voucher for your choice of various local products
including Honey, 2 different flavours of Jellies or a History of Westbank
Calendar which can be redeemed at the historic Westbank Museum.

If you find yourself first at the historic Westbank Museum, before you
leave purchase a voucher for a 1lb can of Okanagan Nation Alliance Wild
Okanagan Sockeye Salmon from Osoyoos Lake that can be redeemed when you
visit the Sncewips Heritage Museum. "Okanagan Select" is a local,
sustainable and responsible trade product that is #1 grade Ocean
Wise-certified: never frozen, and canned quickly to maintain freshness.

Legends From the Sky
The Sncewips Heritage Museum is proud to be sponsoring a screening of
Legends From the Sky, a Holt Hamilton film, on Sunday, September 27th at
the Westside Culture Days Okanagan Short Film Showcase at the Landmark
Cinema in the Westbank Shopping Centre. Showcase starts at 3:30pm, with the
feature film starting at 4:15pm. Admission to the Festival is $2

Travis Holt Hamilton is one of a very small handful of First Nation
filmmakers who continues to make successful contemporary Native American
films outside the Hollywood system. Hamilton wrote his first full-length
feature film while deployed to the Middle East with the United States
Military. When he returned home fifteen months later, he went to work to
turn his script into a film.

Legends From the Sky is the story of a Native American Veteran burdened by
survivor’s guilt. After a disastrous military tour he is forced to search
for his missing grandfather after his ancestral land is mysteriously taken
over by an Unknown Federal Organization. [Film Rated PG. 90 mins.]

Theater located at: 3645 Gosset Rd., Westbank V4T 3J6
