Wait for Me, Daddy Redux

Wait for Me, Daddy taken by Claude Detloff is one of the most recognized photographs in the world and has become iconic for New Westminster. The photograph, which became integral to Canada’s effort in WWII, was taken 75 years ago this October. Join us for a series of events to commemorate this anniversary.

Hyack Square, 1pm
Join City of New Westminster to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the day the Wait for Me Daddy photo was taken. The program will include the unveiling of the official dedication plaque, an interpretive panel and the donor halo recognizing the generous donors who helped fund the project.

Anvil Centre Theatre, 2pm and 7pm
Enjoy contemporary performances inspired by the classic image respond to the collective themes of family separation, war conflict, loss and legacy.

New Westminster composer Brian Garbet with the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble will perform an original orchestral piece based on the famous photo.

A performance curated by Jan Derbyshire will reflect on past and current tools of communication and ways families separated war communicated with each other.

Brief Encounters <http://briefencounters.ca/project/wait-for-me-daddy-redux/> will present a collection of interdisciplinary films and performances animating three New Westminster residents’ stories of conflict and connection.
