The Kaatza Station Museum:
Cowichan Lake Area – 7000
We are open 11 months of the year. We take a break from mid-December until mid-January. The latter
half of January is a time for volunteers to do some repairs, accessioning, display renewals, etc. We reopen the first
Monday of February.
We are open from 10 am – 4 pm
We are run by the Kaatza Historical Society, a non-profit Society.
We usually have a full time curator but we are in the middle of restructuring so that may change. Employed by the Society.
We are funded by a function grant of $30,000 per year by the Regional District. Town of Lake Cowichan, Area I, North side of the lake and Area F, South side of the lake. A cheque is received in the mail.
Our budget is approx. $40,000 per year. The additional funds are comprised of donations and gift shop sales. We also apply for a gaming grant from time for materials and supplies as well as extra staff time for special projects.
The Town of Lake Cowichan owns the three buildings and does any major capital projects and looks after the grounds.
Our volunteers do minor repairs to the outside of the buildings and all maintenance in the interior of the buildings.
We have a five year lease with the Town of Lake Cowichan.
We host a Community Picnic during Heritage Days, a vintage movie night once a year, an appreciation lunch for all of those
who contribute significantly to the museum and an annual Christmas Potluck supper for our members and volunteers.
Hope this helps. Pat Foster.

Subject: [BCMA] Questions re museum governance & funding
Dear BCMA Member:
Our little museum here in Princeton has been going through some changes lately. We are currently in the process of trying to come to an agreement between the Princeton & District Museum & Archives Society (that runs our museum) and the Town of Princeton as to how our museum is governed and funded. Rather than reinventing the wheel it would be very helpful for us to know how other (particularly small-town) museums function.
Below is a list of questions. If you could take the time to answer them we would be extremely grateful. The answers would be really helpful in our negotiations with the Town.
Thank you!
Rika Ruebsaat
President
Princeton & District Museum & Archives Society
