Curator of Collections - Full Time

The Kelowna Museums Society (KMS) is seeking a Curator of Collections to join the Curatorial Dept. Under the direction of the Curatorial Manager, the Curator of Collections carries out fundamental conservation and collections' tasks and supports curatorial initiatives. Specifically, the Curator of Collections executes preventative conservation measures, completes conservation treatments, and performs collections tasks, including registration and cataloguing. The Curator of Collections grows and oversees the conservation and collections volunteers and supports curatorial initiatives by providing conservation services to the public, and by delivering conservation workshops and tours of the Ursula Surtees Regional Conservation Laboratory.


Main Duties

*         Clean, repair and stabilize artifacts from the KMS' collections and practice preventative conservation,

including managing and analyzing environmental readings

*         Acquire, deaccession, catalogue, organize, research and provide public access to the KMS' collections according to collections policies and the priorities established in the annual operating plan

*         Update the artifact register, inventories and collections records in the PastPerfect database using data entry rules that meet current standards of practice

*         Provide training and workshops for staff, volunteers, the public and other cultural institutions

*         Orient, train and oversee conservation and collections volunteers

*         Advise and assist volunteers, donors, researchers and the public with artifact conservation and artifact donation inquiries

*         Prepare donations for presentation to the Collections Committee

*         Further develop the public conservation program in order to meet financial objectives of the department


Requirements

*         Diploma or Master's degree in Cultural Heritage Conservation or Post-secondary education in Museum Studies, with a focus on treatment conservation

*         Minimum three years' experience working as a Curator of Collections, Conservator or Collections Manager within an established cultural institution with a focus on the documentation, management, conservation and care of collections
*         Practice treating a variety of material types
*         Experience working with a museum database, preferably PastPerfect

*         Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including practice public speaking

*         Must enjoy working with volunteers and the public

*         Satisfactory Criminal record check

*         Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License

*         Valid First Aid Certificate is an asset

Salary: $19.53 per hour to start, plus benefits
